My pot of Armageddon dust is running low and I have heard that vallejo texture pastes are much better value for money. Does anyone know which one is most similar in texture and colour to Armageddon dust (which is very similar to zandri dust btw), or have a conversion chart between the two brands that includes texture pastes? Thanks.

A quick search suggests these two:

  • 26.217 Desert sand
  • 26.810 Light brown mud

I suspect Desert sand is the closest. I strongly suggest you visit your FLGS and take a pot of GW armageddon dust and Vallejo desert sand and compare them side-by-side looking at the pot bottoms.

You probably want to have a look at this Reddit thread and blog post:

Probably Desert Sand is closest in colour, although obviously you can paint over it to get any colour you want.

The Vallejo texture pastes are more for reproducing a "realistic" texture, so the texture is not as coarse as the GW ones (i.e. they use finer sand).

++EDIT: In my experience, Vallejo texture pastes are "stickier" than GW ones, so have a tendency to make "peaks" a bit like icing. Personally, I decant some onto a pallet, thin it a bit to reduce the stickiness, and mix in some modelling sand to give a less uniform texture.

Iyanden Yellow might be a good match but I don't know if it is.

I'd have thought Aggaros Dunes was a better match (Iiyanden Yellow is very yellow/orange, Aggaros Dunes is more of a brown) :)

I haven't used zandri dust so you are likely right, Iyanden is just the one I use to get yellow desert

Edit: Not zandri dust, not sure where I got that from.  Aggaros Dunes

Thanks everyone, I think the desert sand sounds best. I have some modelling sand, so I might mix some of that in to adjust the texture, thanks for the tip Cordova. If the colour is too far off, I can always just paint it with zandri dust.
