I agree that’s how it will be, but I also don’t get why GW (seemingly) either never thinks to or cares to do things like just changing words to differentiate things. The rumors suggest they might be doing that with the accursed weapons, but that is just making multiple separate weapons into one that’s generic. Another option is just inventing new wargear to replace old stuff on a 1:1 basis.

E.g.: An Astartes chainsword can become a demon-tooth chainsword. A meltagun becomes an ectomeltagun. Or bolters are loaded with Daemonic shells, etc. I think it’s kinda lame we haven’t seen more of that over the years, I always thought it exemplified their lack of creativity with rules writing and adherence to the status quo. Anecdotally, I’ve seen many people over the years say they’d rather CSM be more than marines with spikes, and aside from the daemon engines and introduction of a few new things (reaper chaincannons), even new sculpts stuck to the imperial wargear paradigm when they didn’t have to.

Still, I think you’re right. For whatever reason they’re quite unwilling to make such changes. But considering the rumors, things like Legionnaires with buffed stats are very appealing to me. There is finally something different that takes the background into account more thoughtfully. They’re not just copied and pasted firstborn marine statline. There is talk that it doesn’t matter because Eldar and Tau will kill them as easily as cultists, and maybe that’s true, but if the alternative is just using the 8th Ed codex for even longer, I’d at least take whatever perks come along with the 9th Ed book. By the rumors, not everything is a negative change so let’s see what other abilities and stratagems are thrown our way!

I agree with this. When you consider that some of the warriors you field might have been around at the time of the heresey surely shouldn't some of their gear and even the legions structure be more like well 30k? at least a little more anyway.

As for weapons I see why they don't make them different but I personally would like to see either an online "Weapons of Humanity" datasheet that is updated with every "human" codex and changes as the come out, Or for them to just suck it up and buff the weapons in the books as they come out regardless of if they appear in other books.

I expect neither of these things to happen.

I think this is one of the things that makes Chaos such a difficult prospect for GW. There's a lot of different perceptions of the Traitor Legions out there. Some people (myself included) really do just want spiky Marines, and aren't wild about throwing Warpstuff into every nook and cranny of the model line. The opposing view's just as valid, though, and the actual models have pinged wildly between these two poles for decades now. I think there was some attempt to split the difference when the various god-aligned Legions were split off into their own books. Death Guard especially got more wildly daemonic and bizarre. The non-aligned Legions, though, have a lot of identity issues that end up pulling them in a bunch of directions, possibly more than any other single list in the game. I don't claim to have any real solutions, here, but any Chaos Legion revamp will, inevitably, irritate and alienate a fair amount of the player base, and there's probably no real single answer.

I'm happy they are combining the profiles for Power swords,Axes and mauls. I like the model bits of them but never liked the rules for mauls as the ap loss was never worth it.

Marks and icons looks like a great way to customise units for their roles. With all looking viable for what you want. Melee and shooting.

Seems like chaos gets better basic melee and loyalist get better basic shooting e.g bolters vs bolt rifes, ccw and chain swords.

Just wanna see the crusade rules now to see how mental we can make units and characters.

Edit A khorne legionnaire supported with an icon equipped with a heavy chain axe will hit at S9 ap -5 D2 which seems like overkill and amazing.

I know it's probably a long shot, since it's an Army of Renown, but is there any mention of the Disciples of Be'lakor in the new codex? I'm curious if it will get any new rules or anything, or if it will just stay the way it is.

Sorry if this has been addressed but I presume the icons are still linked to the mark? like you can't give a unit the mark of Khorne and the icon of despair for instance?

The leaks don't explicitly assign each of the icons up a specific mark

It would be way cooler if they could mix and match them at will to represent the fact that multiple gods could be worshipped at the same time.

Just like you could in 2nd edition.

My Black Legion Terminator Lord marked by Khorne, Slaanesh and Nurgle was a beast. if he ever made it into combat...

So anything on lucius since he'll be one of the only special characters left?

Lucius is looking quite tasty according to the rumors.   He's has Hateful Assault's +1 attack baked into his stat line for 6 attacks base now. He still has fight first and WS2+. Then he has the EC traits of: ignoring negative modifiers to BS/WS, any wound roll of 6 gains +1AP. Finally, starting turn 3 hits rolls of 6 gain +2 hits.  His "Duelist's Pride" rule now grants +3 attacks and +1 damage when fighting units with WS3.  That is amazing! He gets his extra attacks and damage not just against characters but all Marines, Eldar, Orks, etc.

That's 9X attacks at S5/AP-3/Dam 3, averaging 10 hits and potentially 30 damage starting turn 3. Not counting another +3 extra attacks he might gains from Stimulated by Pain, for potentially 12X attacks! Get him stuck in an Exalted Champion for full wound re-rolls. Marines are dropped to a 6+ save and Terminators to a 5++ invulnerable save. With both wounds on a 3+ with free re-rolls taking 3 damage per hit.  Delivery might still be a problem though with all the firepower around to pop Rhinos currently.  But I'm tempted to Rhino rush Lucius an E. Champion, with some Chosen and chainsword Legionaries up the board.

Ooo he does sound fun. That's good now to just pray for a new model and noise marines lol. Maybe they'll have a slaanesh week?

I wouldn't hold out hope for GW to give EC new models any time soon, we're probably still looking at years for those to be released. We'll get them eventually but there's no reason to wait for them. Just convert up a Lucius from a current plastic model. I'm about to refresh my EC army and I'll just 3D print some Sonic Weapons and use the CSM kit for Noise Marines. For my Chosen and Terminators "acursed weapons" I'll either use the swords from the Myrmidesh Painbringers, or 3D print something.
