40K player here who is not too familiar with the comings and goings of the Horus Heresy and am hoping that you guys might be able to help.

Anyway, I've built a 40K Emperor's Children character who has a Heresy era helmet as a trophy (see here for pictures of the mini: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346143-the-judgment-on-kadeth-dr-ruminahuis-emperors-children/?p=5737714)  Are there any legions with which the Emperor's Children had a particular rivalry or hatred for - like the ones between the Thousand Suns and Space Wolves, or the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists?  Asking because, if there is one I thought it would make sense to paint the helmet in the rival legion's colours.

Thanks.

Fulgrim did kill Ferrus and most of the Iron Hands were killed by the Emperor's Children during the Drop Site Massacre, so that's probably the most prominent hatred/rivalry that springs to mind.

Thanks both of you - good to know.  I had known there was a khorne/slaanesh rivalry, but hadn't known it carried over to their mortal representatives.

I find it kind of funny that it doesn't seem like there is anyone in particular the Emperor's Children hate but that plenty of people hate them - my understanding is it is their being selfish jerks was a big reason for the shattering of the alliance between the Heresy era legions.  I can just imagine them killing Ferrus Mannus and being all "LOL we killed your primarch, why you mad bro?" (my appolgioes for the old foggie's version of "cool talk").

Anyway, you've given me some thought of possibilities - iron hands seems like the most obvious choice now, but may not have the contrast I'm looking for.  Given that the trophy must be of some personal importance to be preserved for 10K years, another thought is to have it be an Emperor's Children helmet (perhaps a loyalist or a personal rival) but that would kind of have the same issue as the iron hands one, as my force's paint scheme is pretty close to their pre-heresy colours.

When you're the best, why concern yourself with your inferiors?

Just to add to the above:

  • Iron Hands are the classic choice, both legions were extremely close before the betrayal
  • The EC are often contrasted with the Blood Angels in 30k as being two sides of the "artsy" coin, so there's some degree of rivalry there
  • Fulgrim & the Khan have a bit of a feud, and a large portion of the EC are heavily involved in hunting down the White Scars before their flight to Terra, so WS would be a great option
  • Any of the shattered legions (Iron Hands + Salamanders + Raven Guard), as Retribution talks a little about how - of all the traitors - it was the EC who thrived in the hunter-kill role post-Isstvan

They also grow to hate the Sons of Horus for their status as the preeminent legion, and there's the whole Khorne/Slaanesh dynamic going on with the World Eaters as mentioned above.

Another option would be to have it as an Ultramarine. As cliché as it might sound to have the Imperial posterboys as a trophy, they did clash in the conflict that saw Guilliman mortally wounded by Fulgrim, so I could see an EC having a trophy as a mockery towards them.

That happened after the scouring though didn't it? A lot less of a chance to have a heresy pattern helmet if it's been many years since mk7 was introduced.

As a side note and while it can absolutely pass as a mk4 helmet, I think it’s actually a primaris helmet. Though the long war narrative is quite cool.

I believe that EC’s could have as much hate for loyalists as for traitors. In particular, a death guard or World eaters white helmet could be a nice contrast.

SkimaskMohawk, that's true, but I feel if Guilliman was around, at that point the chapter would likely still have some Heresy-era equipment around, specially used by the chapter's veterans, which I feel would likely make some of the most prized trophies for any traitor that felled one. That's a primaris helmet?  Whoops - guess it shows I'm not so familiar with the primaris models... though that does make more sense, given the trophy is straight out of the 40K Chaos Space Marine box, which is only a couple of years old.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, though... some great stuff for me to consider.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Sons of Horus - the first among equals are targets for the 3rd to prove their superiority, the EC savaged the SoH in the eye in the inter-legion wars, stealing Horus's corpse, then the SoH remnants/Black Legion/Abaddon dropped a starship on their capital city. Some bad blood for sure.
