Anyone using aircraft?

As the title asks.  I used to get immense mileage out of my two Storm Talons in my blood ravens army.  I was thinking about fire support while I was working and thought about whether the 5++ in our chapter plus hard to hit might make fliers decent fire support.

New primaris stormspeeder is also a fast flying thing with 10W, it is 145pts, has 3 melta shots and 2 missile shots. And it is just considered as "borderline playable" in competitive games.

 

Marine planes have -1hit as aircraft but less firepower...IMO not a good deal.

With the new Tau codex already out now I just feel vehicles won’t last long enough to make a significant contribution.

Mostly concur. If it can't hide easily or be put in strategic reserve it won't last long.

 

Even if it is in reserve, that alpha strike is going to need to be strong in order to avoid just exploding to return fire.

I am really tempted to bring out a storm raven in a casual game. I have one unpainted in the basement and I am so tempted to play with one, even if it sucks

I was tempted as well, especially since mine is painted. Then I saw the points and decided on something else.

In what seems to be an opposite opinion, I have 1 each of the Storm Raven, Talon and Hawk, and depending on the game mostly, I have always found air support to be a crucial component in game. The Raven is expensive, but the Talon or Hawk are great force multipliers if used right. I use the Hawk if the enemy have fliers in the field and the Talon if not to pound ground targets. Yes, they do take hits and get taken out in a lot of cases, but they do an almost equal amount of damage to the opponent beforehand and draw fire away from other things you could be moving to where they need to be. Take one flier in a game and see for yourself.

The only think I don't understand is how transports work in fliers. are they basically like normal rhinos? Cause I wanna put some crusaders in there to charge in and start punching

I think the Tau codex and the Custodes one is the coffin nail for all competitve marine lists in general when it comes to meta. 

 

But flyers are trash in our books except the forgeworld ones.

I may have the opportunity to get either an interceptor or a fire raptor soon. Dunno how either would do, but honestly the low bar for space marine models is the LRC? If a storm raven manages to do more I would be happy lol.
