Help with Legio Choice

Calling any Titan lore expert to help maybe guide a fellow titan enthusiast with finally landing on a legio to move forward with.

For many years I have collected and owned titans both the large FW kits and have collected a traitor and loyalist force for AT. But I have had a hard time settling on a legio to paint. I must admit, I need to sit down with the lore more before arriving at a final decision but ultimately I find myself at the following crossroads:

I would like to pick a legio for the large scale FW titans that I feel would exist in 30k and 40k. These would all be imperial. And preferably one with a connection with Thousand sons pre-heresy. I realize this is a rough one to pick. I'm not sure if one exists with close enough ties that could also be imperial. I think Legio Xestobiax worked very closely but this wouldn't work because the impression I got was that the legion ultimately fizzled out and is definitely not imperial in 40k. I thought about legio astorum but this one seems pretty popular already and I can't find the old LARGE transfer sheets anymore.

What is the validity to making a new titan legio lore-wise? Is there room to make a new scheme and lore? Or are the titan legio's pretty set?

Side note: What titan legio associates with knight house Taranis?

I made up my own legio. I enjoyed that process, and it's certainly permitted within the rules, you can either choose a legio's rules to proxy, or the custom legio rules in Defence of Ryza.

The only big downside to the custom legio rules is that big voices in the AT community, such as Goonhammer and Maximal Fire have all concluded that all custom legio combinations are automatically overpowered, and have banned them from events, and other events are copying them because they are seen as a metric of the game, said voices not realising their own influence, despite them not always being right.

I must admit, I am leaning toward making my own legio. I was thinking of perhaps an Egyptian-themed with an Anubis symbol as I have quit a few transfers for this. The only thing stopping me was not knowing how much room there is in the lore for creating one. I don't think its the same as making a new space marine chapter. It certainly has nothing to do with the rules, so if the custom legio's are considered broken, then I would simply just pick a legio proxy.

I don't want to pull the trigger on making new lore if there is no room for a new legio in the lore. This pick will mostly be for the large scale FW imperial titans that could be used in both 30k and 40k.

I really don't think they are 'broken'. The problem is that some of the traits are very good, and there's no restrictions on what you can combine. But I personally think you'll struggle to mae a custom legio which is as good as the best set legios. I chose my traits for the lore, and stick with the same 4 regardless of the maniples I take. This means that two of my traits are useless if I don't take any Warhounds, but that's what my legio specialises in.

There's plenty of room in 30k for a custom legio, and an egyptian theme would be cool, especially if you can find an Anubite style head which will fit on a warhound!

You can certainly make a custom Legio. Either make your own one up or use another’s rules.

Astorum are the only legio noted as working with the thousand sons that I know of. They’re also awesome, both to play and paint. The lack of transfers is certainly a problem though. I’d be tempted to pick something where you could get transfers at both scales. Any legio could have fought with the thousand sons somewhere or other, after all.

Ignatum and tempestus are most likely to have fought with Taranis. Morris were also on mars but they don’t seem to have been on good terms. Taranis also spread all over the place though, so again they’d have worked with whoever they met.

I'll add my voice to the "Yes to a custom Legio" crowd.

It is certainly possible to abuse the rules by min-maxing them to death, but if you're going for narrative flavor, then very few people would have any issue.

If you're planning to walk at tourneys, then perhaps another option...

I pick mine on the colour scheme alone even if the rules aren't that cracking. I started with Legio Defensor as I love their scheme and fluff their rules are alright but only really impact the first turn, I started Mordaxis again for colours but didn't really like painting it. Now I have a Legio Metalica maniple and love everything about the legio :D Legio Damicium are potentially on the horizon as a corrupted legio later this year.

Nothing stopping you painting your titans however you like and using another Legios rules - the crusade rules are good the transfers are slowly coming out (I don't even have any for Defensor!)
