Love the Forgefiend, even if it does need a third gun.

Thank you Kaiju!

I was dry fitting a third gun instead of the connector piece or to have them in a triangle shape perhaps but I couldn't get it looking right

When I found the bit I used for the neck and head, I figured I would paint the grill/mouth thing to be glowing like it was a gun similar to how the Forgefiend works

Yeah, that'll probably work. Triple Ectoplasma is nasty this edition.

Throne of Skulls at WHW - December 2023

1500 points and every datasheet must be unique

Right then, I've never been to Warhammer World and the Throne of Skulls tournament is taking place in December so I thought, why not?

I'm going to be taking my Corsairs (of course) and have a "Rough Draft" list so far:

Huron

Daemon Prince with wings, MoS, Go-Go juice enhancement (blanked the name)

Master of Executions

10 Legionaries, 2x Heavy Accursed, Balefire tome, Melta Gun, Lascannon

Rhino

10 Raptors

Forgefiend

6 Bikes

Predator Annihilator

Venomcrawler

+95 spare points

My idea for the list is basically the Hounds of Huron (lead by the DP with wings, the Marshall of the hunt) are on the hunt, tracking down those on their lists that have wronged the big man in some way. Huron is there to oversee and perhaps be the one to take the final blow and has brought with him a retinue of the Space/Red Wolves loyal to him. Possibly as a bodyguard, the Hounds are part of the Red Corsairs but are effectively autonomous so have the potential for backstabbing if they felt the tides shifting.

All my unit choices are based around which units are able to keep up and move fast or mount up. It's a hunting force, tracking and hunting their mark so want to keep moving. The Forgefiend for example was built with this kind of idea in mind, long running legs for distances rather than the low to the ground short powerful legs of the standard 'Fiend.

So what do I do with the 95 spare points? Whilst it's a narrative themed tournament, I'd still like to hold my own. With that in mind, I'm reasonably low on Objective holders. The Marines, Raptors and Bikes are good at holding objectives in my experience and Huron's blob will be OC34 which is really nice to pile onto an objective. However, it doesn't leave much for my backfield. Both the Predator and the 'Fiend will be in my backlines but I'm not wanting to only use them for holding points, they both need to do some heavy lifting as they're my main Anti-tank.

Cultists + Liber Hereticus is nice, LH boosting the marine blob further would be good and Cultists are good gameplay wise. Having said that, Cultists don't really fit the vibe I'm going for. They wouldn't be able to keep up with Astartes vehicles and bikes.

Harken Worldclaimer would boost my Raptors massively and make them something the opponent has to deal with, he's not going to boost my Objective control though. He fits with my theme and would be another fitting headhunter. A good choice perhaps

Fellgor Ravagers are 95 points on the dot. They have Scout 6", they'd be a good early game mdifield holder and a decent chaff bully unit, especially if the enemy unit is on an objective. Thematically they work really well too, they're a fast moving tracking unit like some sort of odd sniffer hound unit.

Re-write a good chunk of the list. Another plan I had was to: Drop the Pred+Rhino and also the Marines and take a Landraider and 10 Chosen in it's place. I gain a large vehicle that Performs the role of the Rhino and Predator in one with extra guns plus it gives me a way to spring board the marine blob up the board when needed. The Chosen give me a unit that swings much much harder in combat than the Legionaries with much more wounds and some tricky movement shennanigans on top of the ones I get from Huron. The downside being that it's a bullet magnet (unless I use MoN strat) and that I have 1 less model to try holding objectives. Both would fit my theme, the Landraider is a fast vehicle and Huron's personal ride. The Chosen (I haven't built yet but had the idea for) basically being a unit of lesser Lords and Champions in the Red Corsairs from the Astral Claws days that Huron trusts and calls upon to be his bodyguards for sensitive missions. Their movement tricks also fit the fast mover and hunting theme too

Lots to think about!

I've been using 5 Noise Marines with sonic weapons for a backfield unit. Assault on the sonic blasters means they can be mobile and still shoot/perform actions, they out out a decent number of shots per model, and a Blastmaster provides a fair bit if punch. Plus you can still load the champion with weapons in something does get close.

Noise Marines might be a great shout actually! I have plans for a squad of all 4 devoted legions but using the renegade schemes for each from the Psychic Awakening.

The Noise marines would be Flawless Host with Grav-cannons, Plague Marines would be The Purge, Thousand Sons would be The Scourged and Khorne Berzerkers as Brazen Beasts. Basically as a way to make some visual pop, nod to the Renegades that aren't part of legions but also to scratch the itch I have to paint an army of each of these

I picked up some Fellgor as I may use them for mt ToS list but I also just wanted some to paint, they're gorgeous models!

PXL_20230917_211350835.thumb.jpg.d37cfa1ff900875cc2292526dc76c72a.jpg

As an aside, I'm sure I'm not the only person to notice this but I'm relatively sure at some point we'll get a Fellgor Ravager kit/unit that either doesn't ahve the Killteam specialists in or one that uses the same base kit + another upgrade sprue. Basically the way the sprues are laid out to be, the base 10 Fellgor with normal Melee weapons, pistols and 1 guy with the 2 handed weapon are on the normal 2 sprues, then the smaller sprue has all the specialists bits on for Killteam.

This is the same setup other "Upgrade Sprue" killteams have had: Hand of the Archon, Votann, Phobos, Legionaries etc

Will it come to anything? Maybe but probably not

TC Pondering adding a Defiler to his list again

ad3.jpg.3845a5e537e0e897370e110278721223.jpg

Why must I be like this? Perhaps this is my curse from the Dark Gods?

The long and short of it is, I want to add a Defiler to my Throne of Skulls list. My re-re(x4)vamped list is looking like:

Huron

DP with wings + GoGo juice

Harken

6x Bikes

10 Raptors

VenomCrawler

10 Chosen

Landraider

Defiler

This looks quite different to the first list right? I dropped 10 Legionnaries, MoE, Rhino, Predator and Forgefiend +95 points (probably would've been Fellgor) spare for Harken, 10 Chosen, Landraider and Defiler.

Why the changes?

Legionaires for Chosen is a pretty clear change I think. Chosen are point for point scarier than Legionaires with some really cool tricksy movement that I think  fits my theme very well. What I lose in special weapons and OC, I gain in raw killing power, Wounds and tricks. Whilst they're 1 OC less, Chosen are still 2OC each with Huron in the squad so are still surprisingly good I think.

Predator and Rhino for the Landraider is also quite clear, what I lose from 1 extra model to hold objectives and target saturation, I gain from more guns, higher toughness better strat application and movement shenanigans from Assault Ramps. If I'm going to have a load of eggs in one basket, I need that basket to be made of Steel and bristling with guns. Also, it's a Landraider

MoE for Harken is an interesting one, I think. I lose the ability to regain CP through killing characters, buffs to the Chosen and a good character sniper for a decent character sniper, more Battle shock shenanigans and Mortal Wounds on the Charge. I think it'll come out in the wash overall but I kind of need the Raptors to do something decent, so my thought is that Harken will boost that. Whilst I won't have +1 to hit and wound thanks to the MoE, I will still be able to use Profane Zeal which should boost the Chosen quite heavily

Forgefiend for Defiler, I think is where things get a bit more contraversial. The Forgefiend's guns are undoubtably fantastic, it's a fantastic application for Profane Zeal or having the MoN for more shots. However, where I think the Defiler pips it for me is the Flexibility. Forgefiends are solely gunpigs, they sit back and blast targets incredibly well and hold onto your backfield. With the Defiler, I can shoot with the Battlecannon and a Twin Las-cannon, I can fight in combat with a Claw and the Scourge, I can Tank Shock for 18 (16+2) D6, I can Heroic Intervention as it's a Walker, it moves through other Vehicles and Monsters as well as over 4" or lower terrain as if it wasn't there, it has 2W and 2OC over the Fiend although it undoubtedly gets put in more danger with a larger profile

Lots to think about, lots to ponder (mostly Defilers as usual)

On the hobby front, I've started building the Chosen using the Khorne Berzerker kit and removing the Khorne Symbols where they crop up. I'm a huge fan of this kit, it's so cool and it scales really nicely next to the rest of the marines. I'll take some photos once I've fully built a couple

So I managed to mock up the first Chosen this weekend using the Berzerker kit:

PXL_20230922_161943251.thumb.jpg.7adf272461b066681f3acea6dd6fcaba.jpg

PXL_20230922_161948980.thumb.jpg.21125d98fac5d0f438f3eb91619013b2.jpg

This kit is amazing honestly, a small amount of removal work to remove Khorne Symbols (more to be done on the shoulder pad) and you've got slightly bigger marines. 7 of the models are sprinting and 3 are striding which will help sell the action poses for the Chosen. I picked up some of the FW character heads and also some fo the Sons of Horus ones so I'll be mixing both in. I need to build: 4 Combi-weapons, 4 Plasma Pistols, 2 with Dual AW, 2 with power fists/Heavy weapons and one with an Icon. We'll see how the rest go!

As if by magic, I was musing about getting another Defiler, posted the comment about it and had a quick look at a Facebook group I'm a part of. First post has a Defiler for silly cheap.

It was a sign!

PXL_20230925_160003792.thumb.jpg.c2d616165b8dced7b04d2af2b2ec64dd.jpg

It's in good condition and well built. I think it was for a nurgle project as they were selling some other nurgle bits but also it has some sort of home made texture pasta on some bits. I think ti was sand+PVA+Paint. Its' been in for a dunk and has mostly come off so not too bad. I've got a couple of the Wardog bird heads that were given to me by a very kind member of a Discord I'm in. All I need to do is figure out a scourge and then get to building!

That converted berzerker looks great as a chosen and is a brilliant idea.

Nice find with the defiler - hopefully you can get all the crud off.  If it is primarily PVA, either a long soak in cleaning fluid or getting a knife between it and the model should get it off fairly easily.

And yeah, the mauler fiend lashers would be the right size, but might look a little short in that functionally they would be able to reach very little from up there on the shoulder.  To be fair, though, the same can be said for the actual flail that comes with the defiler.

I'll be scratch building one for my defiler build out of wire, plasticard, some old necromunda knives and green stuff, so you could do something similar as well.  If you are patient, you can wait to see how mine goes, but as a warning it's probably the last (or almost last) part of my build.  Basically,  my intent is to build something that starts as fleshy tentacles on the vehicle end and turns into venomcrawler-esque mechano-tentacles at the business end.

Thank you both!

I dry fitted a Maulerfiend scourge and honestly wasn't a huge fan, I did think it'd be the one I use in theory but in practice it just didn't sit right with me for some reason. I did find a bit that I absolutely loved:

I used a set of twin lascannons from the RTB01 landraider in my IRon Warriors force (it only came with one pair so I didn't use them previosuly) and also a very old Chaos Dreadnought scourge. It's retro and I actually really like it. He's of course dragging some hero of the imperium like a doll which is always fun. The panels with the gunk on need some more cleaning up work and I have a replacement head on the way too.

I also got a couple more Chosen built up:

Thank you gaurdian!

I tweaked the Defiler that little bit extra as some bits arrived (very generously donated to me and wouldn't take any money for them) so the Defiler is looking about 10x better now:

I also got some more Chosen done:

Is that a war dog head on the defiler? Also the birds are really nice touch and tie the defiler in really well with the rest of the force.  Are you going to deface the imperial insignia on the combi? The chosen are coming together really well! I especially like the one with 2 swords, kind of a duelist vibe going on there. Doing great work!

It is indeed a Wardog head! It perked this model right up in my books, gives it a bit more direct and also maks it a bit creepier

I'd forgotten about the Aquilla until after I posted the photos, blood things are everywhere! It'll be scratched off very shortly

So I finished up the last 2 Chosen:

And I replaced the first chosen's chainsword witha  Dark elf cludgel thing

I think I'm going to re-work the Chsoen with Combi and Axe as they feel a bit awkward as is but otherwise I'm very happy with the unit so far:

PXL_20230929_193506185.thumb.jpg.e17c16fd4cbd80523a7646f9bed0f81e.jpg

I got paid last Friday and was looking to book Throne of Skulls but as is turns out, it's fully booked :ermm:

I'm on the waiting list/queue is people drop out but I knew I should've booked it as soon as I saw it, that's what I get for waiting a bit

I'm still going to be getting the list I've built painted and get some practice games in on the off-chance I do get offered a spot but onwards we go!

Personally, I think the pose is fine - it seems like a very natural pose if one is focusing on moving quickly and doesn't have a target.

The wardog head on the defiler looks good, though I think the neck needs some work so it doesn't look like its just plopped on.  It ties in nicely with the scourge arm, which looks a bit like a fleshless/featherless wing - you could make and attach a few feathers to it (out of thin plasticard or greenstuff) if you wanted to accentuate that.

Didn't catch if you said where the heads on your chosen are from - they are fantastic.

Looks good! For the combi axe guy, maybe have the gun pointing forward or have the axe slung on his back and have him hold the gun with 2 hands? Something just seems a little off in the positioning.

I think the 2 handed pose wiht the axe slung on the back is probably going to be the one I go for, I may also try out the arm outstretched although I may not as I'd like each model to be unique in pose and equipment. I'll give it a go either way!

I think the head needs a bit of GS work and maybe some small cables to make it look like ti fits in, aye. The fleshless wing isn't an angle I'd thought of, grat spot Dr!

The Helmets are the new Sons of Horus "MK6" helmets and the bare heads are from the FW Character heads set 2:

Now that the Call to Arms event is completed and my Eldar backlog is complete, I'm back onto painting other projects! I'm currently sharing my time between blitzing through my Flesh Eater Courts army and also finishing off started Corsairs projects. Number 1 on the priority list are the Tartaurus terminators:

Big fan of your conversions and painting my dude. Can I ask why you don’t drill the barrels though?

Thanks librarian!

I started to drill barrells for a previous project, way back when but after doing a unit or two I just felt that it was an extra step I didn't need or want to do. When I was starting to get into the online part of 40k there was also quite a vocal part of the community that would comment on people's posts something to effect of "Great painting but drill your :cuss:in barrels". It always rubbed me as a kind of elitism. Not that I'm accusing you of this here in any way! I think it's just something that attributed to me not liking drilling my barrels

I can understand the appeal but it really isn't for me!
