What has happened to the space marine (and other xenos) painting app?

I followed a couple of links both from threads here and from outside websites (Phil's 1K chapter page), but the links just generate "this doesn't exist" pages.

Are the painting applications gone? If so, is there anywhere else that we can do similar work?

Brother Tyler detailed the changes to the painter in a different thread. In short, they're gone for now, but may return.

Progress is being made with the painters, but they are not currently the priority.

In the meantime there is an app called Impcat that is pretty effective though it is not free and you have to manually install files for GW models and paint ranges.

It's possible to create your own files for Impcat but it's currently beyond my understanding.

I tried Impcat, but the GW paint files refused steadfastly to work on the App for me.

Good to see it wasn’t just my tired old brain.  Couldn’t get it to work either, though I’m still trying occasionally to sort it out.

There used to be a painter app in the Adeptus Astartes(?) thread that received semi-regular updates from the creator.  Is that still around or been abandoned?

Yeah, it's not easy to get Impcat running GW files so easily. I'm not very skilled with phones but I'll see if I can help.

I agree, getting the files to work with impcat is a pain and I don't remember 100% What I did, I might have needed to move the images into a directory on the phone? It sounds like the area you were struggling with was the part I had trouble with.

Hopefully it will help. The app doesn't have a wealth of 40k content but for the models that were represented in the painting apps that were hosted here it might help.
