What's your perfect game look like?

Recommended Posts

There are many ways to play this game, and there was a little talk of it in a recent thread, which made me wonder, how do YOU like playing, and what sort of people do you like playing with?

I think my style is influenced by playing Historicals so much.

I enjoy a BIG game, in 30k or 40k, without of points, at least 3k but 4, 5 or 6k would be better, on a BIG table (8x6 or 9x5) with fully painted armies, terrain, and a good mat, actual objectives, played with someone you can have good banter with, or better a group of people, with a few drinks and some food over an evening. I prefer a single big thematic/narrative game over a few smaller random games in an evening.

I like to play with friends, who have painted cool looking units, and who are fun to play with and hang out with.

What about you?

I love telling stories. In previous 40k editions I have played many narrative games and built stories for my army. In 6th edition I built the entire 2nd company of carmine blades. 6 10 man tac squads, 2 full man assault squads, 2 5 man dev squads, a retinue, and Chaplain plus small contingent of death company.

In 30k that mind set continues. I will be taking my 30k Raven Guard to the 2023 LVO for the major narrative event. Events that give my army identity is the things I crave.

I play some matched play casually...but in open play Every. Single. Model. Must be WYSIWYG

My local group only meets once a month, so they usually try to play small pick-up games (2-3 hours max). Personally I prefer larger games that take all day. Luckily I have my own 6' by 5.5' table at home. On occasion, I have rented a small venue to play games on a bigger table.

Fully painted armies on fully painted terrain are, IMHO, the best way to play. A cool scenario based around the lore adds a lot to the game, as do themed forces.

I've never been one for chasing the meta or building super competitive lists, and the same is largely true of my group. Tournaments just aren't a thing and everyone is pretty cool.

So TL;DR I prefer bigger, themed games, but casual and relaxed is fine too.

To me the spectacle of the game is of as much value as the game itself, in an ideal world I want an "immersive" good looking board. Cohesive and painted miniatures, with some manner of narrative that sets the scene of the fight, the personalities involved and decides the objective in terms which are understandable on a in-universe level, even better if it's in the context of linked battles telling a story. If I am to get more nitpicky I also enjoy it when people make a lot of use of the general space marine units, and it's not all legion-spesific specialist units running around everywhere.

None of this is required, of course, but to me that's the dream.

3K, fully painted armies, nice terrain, and both me any my opponent bring blind take all comers lists.

I'm not very interested in the historical side of things, but I don't want to worry about either of us being competitive.  Just a fun casual, who's dudez can win the day game!
