Inspired by a discussion regarding the Space Wolves in other parts of the forum where I gave the opinion that the SW, both in 40k and 30k, are really only Viking-ish when it comes to their internal nomenclature and some of their names. Both regarding their looks and warfare are they much more fantasy barbarians and totem-warriors than anything Viking-ish. So I was wondering if you wanted to do a viking-ish SW (or other chapter) force, where could you get bits? And I mean here by viking-ish inspired by the real stuff from the Viking Age not pop-cultural viking stuff that don't have historical basis*.

That means that Kromlech's Sons of Thor bits or  THE CUSTOM BIT's "Vikings" don't count since they are fantasy barbarians- and/or totem-warrior-ish much more than viking.

* I would say that stuff inspiered by the Vendel Period and Kievan Rus' is also of interest.

This is a tricky one, as with everything 40k (and 30k to a lesser extent) the Space Wolves are an exaggerated caricature of what "Vikings in SPAAAACE!!" could be.

As with alot of the "themes" assigned to sub-factions in 40k they are also intentionally a blend of a few different influences as you've identified. Some other examples include the Ultramarines being a blend of "Classical" influences mainly Roman and Greek rather than JUST the Roman Legions, White Scars take influences from all over East Asia not just the Mongols, the Thousand Sons aren't exclusively Egyptian in inspiration either.

The themes I feel are better for it, they aren't just a direct pastiche of real societies.

I had a look through your links and there weren't many images to use as references for the kind of thing you're looking for, and I'm not sure how well historically accurate Vikings translate to heavily armoured super-soldiers.

Puppetswar do some bits and pieces that might appeal to you a bit more than the examples you gave though.

Bare heads:

Helmeted heads:

Shields:

Hopefully some of those are the kind of thing you're looking for,

Rik

SM sized swords based on RL viking-sword (like how the Ultramarines have ones based on the Gladius), heads with the silly haircuts at least some of the vikings are described with, SM sized bling based on viking broschs and other jewellry from that era, unhelmted heads with the kind of hats we know they had, backpacks that have the round nozzles exchange with the wooden animal heads from the Oseberg ship, etc.

I would actually say that visually their classic look, with their Oseledets haircut and long moustaches seen on many White Scars illustrations and Firstborn WS models, is a nod toward the Zaporozhian Cossacks, who are often depicted with that kind of haircut and moustache, more than anything East Asian.

Sadly those are not what I'm looking fore, wrong culture or more of a "standard barbarian" look, then real viking.

Those on the other hand could work.
