I detect Heresy!? An old member asking a few questions.

Greetings brothers,

Have we the Black Templars lost our way? Forgotten about the Emperors Will? Are we walking the Path of Heresy?

I need to know!

Hello fellow Black Templar fanatics,

Firstly a brief summary and then some questions, that I hope you may be able to answer for me.

Its been more than 10 years since I played 40k (was 5th or 6th ed?) and havent kept up with anything related to this with the exception of DOW on the pc and playing Dark Heresy RPG.

It all started again with painting some unfinished units some months back for relaxation. (I do not have any urge to play anymore)

Ordered the 9th ed Codex, hoping for pictures and useful hobby related stuff. All i saw was .... Meh.  (the overdose on rules is another topic on its own which I wont be asking about.)

Then I came back here looking for inspiration and also checking out what people play now. This made me confused. It looks from my perspective that most people are playing standard SM but painted in BT colours. ( I can understand the whole primaris push as that is how GW will make money and they made them the better option)

What makes BT, BT in the current edition? After reading other chapter specific books I have the feeling that they have way more flavour to them than the BT. Am I correct in assuming this?

I noticed that there are new bases ingame, seeing that the "new" sword brethren have now larger bases (which make them more eye catching). What size are they? the 40mm ones? Is the new Helbrecht base the same as a dreadnought one? (this gives me loads of conversion ideas)

If you were present for the advent of the sixth edition codex you'd have remembered we were folded into the main space marine codex. The old sacred tome of codex black templars was now a distant memory from 4th edition.

Fast forward to 9th edition and everyone (including the big 3) have been folded into the main SM codex, but everyone is getting their own codex supplement. In fact, prior to the current HH craze, the last space marine release was codex supplement black templars and the most extensive chapter related kit refresh (in primaris format) yet. The book is codex black templars in all but name. Current GW support is the best its ever been in decades.

For a long time, to have any semblance of "recent" model kits, you pretty much had to use the latest generic kits and paint them in the black. Yes our chapter specific stuff, cocurrent with the 4th edition codex as they were, was still out there in the wilds, but they were positively ancient by now.

The classic marine (ie, non-primaris) upgrade kit was technically not even compatible with the latest tactical marine kit (though nothing that any modeller worth his salt couldn't surmount), our characters were in finecast (awful quality resin substituting the original pewter they were designed for). In short, stuff was showing their age, not so much any of the more recent marine toys that came during the 17 odd so year gap between the last, and the most recent templar releases.

Primaris too, when they first came out, were very plain looking by design, a blank canvas for any and all chapters to use. This has in fact been one of the biggest complaints (aside from lore, but not touching that) leveled at them, but the more recent releases has begun to address this, first with the Indomnitus box at the start of 9th, and again with our Templar relases just last year. 

So to circle back to your question, If you feel you see mostly "black ultra marines" on this forum, that's to a large degree explained by that's what people had to go with for a long period of time unless they used very old models or went out of their way to alter their models themselves. Heck, my own crusade plog is a good example: https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353155-reinhards-primaris-crusade/ if you look at the first page, you'll see my crusade as it was a year+ ago, in its "black ultra marines" form, while the last couple of pages will start showcasing the newer black templar models.

Seriously though, the wording here at first almost made me dismiss your entire post as trolling. Other chapters are more flavorful? How? We are the de facto poster-chapter for religious space marines. Biggest lore change since before would be that while in the 4th edition codex we were described as faithful to some non-descript faith, its now official that we follow the imperial cult. We venerate the emperor as the GOD-emperor. We are the most zealous, the most uncompromising, and we do not rest in our duty to conquer the galaxy in His name.

We never followed the edicts of the codex astartes, we are not structured as a typical codex chapter nor do we have the same amount of marines. We ban the use of psykers because such was the edict of nikea declared by the Emperor.

We are unique in our faith, we are unique in our structure, our doctrine, our history. We aren't just differently coloured ultramarines with one different unit and different names for our ranks that otherwise mirror the codex structure, which is what most other "different" chapters could hope for. I'd dare say we have the most identity of any chapter.

Do you complain for lore or is it about the playstyle? Because I am not a huge fan of the playstyle of that codex too - thats why I have some issues with some here...

 

But the lore is very flashed out and everything from 4th Edition + XXX !!! I play Templars since the beginning - even before we got our beloved codex armageddon. And the lore is so rich now. We get a new Helbrecht book, the Supplement has nice flavour in it and Sigismunds character in the Horus Heresy novels has been worked out HUUUUUGE.

Well, given that he stated that he has no desire to play anymore, and that he was uninterested in the amount of rules in the latest codex, iI assume the former.

The time I think the playstyle for BT was the best is the last year of 5th edtion. But honestly - rules changes very fast and you will have fun to learn 9th if you have a few friends out there.
