Apothecaries and Dedicated Transports

Afternoon.

Does putting an Apothecary with a 10 man unit deny them the possibility to purchase a dedicated transport?

Wondering on this as units that can take Rhinos as dedicated transports are specifically mentioned (rather foolishly in my mind given the total transport capacity) as being able to be taken if less than ten models.

My thought is no as the dedicated transport is purchased at army creation whereas the Apothecaries aren't assigned until just before deployment (interestingly it doesn't appear to prevent multiple Apothecaries in one unit either).

You're right, it does not prevent a unit from purchasing a dedicated transport. In the apothecarion detachment special rule, second paragraph, they're considered as part of that unit, and gain all of the special rules and unit sub-types (dedicated transports options, for example), with the exception of certain special rules that call it out (Bitter Duty, as an example). They cannot take wargear options that the rest of the unit can (only the wargear in it's own rules).

Well the rhino has a transport capacity of 12, FYI :-)

Yes they do but the rules specifically say units of  10 or less may select a Rhino/Land Raider.

It seems a little silly but that's how it's written currently.

OOOOH I see what your question is now.

Yes,  You select the rhino at the time of creating your unit's total package of options.  That includes selecting a rhino for your 10 man unit.

After that at the beginning of the game, before any models are deployed is when you "assign" your apothecaries.  So essentially the rhino selection (and 10 man gating criteria) happen well before you put the apothecary in there.

Think of it like security at the airport. You can't BRING a Coke through the TSA security. But once you're on the other side, you can buy as many Coke's as you like from the various vendors in the terminals.
