Any Astartes Chapters that have a naval focus?

Recommended Posts

Thought it would be cool to see if there are any Astartes chapters that put the MARINE in Space Marine. Do we know of any Space Marine chapters, presumably fleet-based, who are almost exclusively adept in ship-to-ship combat, boarding actions (and thus close quarters corridor-to-corridor firefights), and void-combat in general?

The Marines Errant.

Fleet based, their trade is their name, spread thin, patrol shipping lanes, do so much boarding they have a great fondness for boarding shotguns.

EDIT: Forgot, they have a Naval Bolter as well.

Imperial Fists are renowned shipborne warriors with several successors following that trend.

Yeah they did come to mind honestly, I do like them quite a lot. Very aesthetically pleasing colour scheme.

Soul Drinkers (Firstborn, before the rebellion) were a fleet-based chapter, with a specialty in shipborne assault and defense. Their Primaris replacements...maybe?

I had no idea the Soul Drinkers had been refounded as a Primaris chapter, very interesting! I don't know how much their successors really know about their Firsborn predecessors history, but they most probably use similar tactics as their forebears.

I believe they had a story in the Successors novel, showing a lieutenant of theirs fighting alongside some Inquisition forces and then trying to figure out more information about the previous chapter, but realizing all the information had been erased.

The Void Tridents and an Ultima Founding chapter known for their expertise in naval warfare.

Yeah that seems pretty spot on, thank you! The bronze and blue is quite a nice scheme. And it looks like they've seen their fair share of action both in Ultramar and defending the Nachmund Gauntlet.

I saw in the liber another user’s chapter seems to be naval based in the traditional sense.

Not fleet based chapters.

Fleet based chapters would all be adept at boarding action, as having a fleet of note means you'll invariably engage enemies in void warfare.

It just comes down to whether lore has been written detailing a lot of fleet combat for a specific chapter in which they board enemy ships. As far as I know, this is common occurrence when Astartes are involved in void warfare.

This is a broad question in scope as other have noted being a Fleet Based chapter invariably makes them at least somewhat specialised in Void Warfare as they’ll more than likely have a larger fleet

The only chapters I know that are specifically named as being Specialists in Boarding Actions are the Astral Claws, Void Tridents and the Imperial Fists

The Executioners are named as a consummate ship killers in the Badab War  being responsible for more ship kills than any other faction
