Welcome to the 5th year of the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge. I started this challenge in 2019 to keep me motivated throughout the year, and to help me stick to my Hobby goal of completing *at least* one model per month.

In 2019 I developed a series of Randomizer Tables are still available for this year, and you are most welcome to use them yourselves, or ask to put on the Randomizer List, and I will roll for everyone on the list a week prior to the new month.

As with last year, I'd like some company, if you'd like to join me with a commitment to 1x model (or more) per month for the 12 months of 2023, I'd love to have you along.

The Rules are pretty simple;

• I DO NOT expect you to use the Random Tables, you are more than welcome to pledge models towards your existing armies, or choose a model you would like to complete.
• Multiple model pledges are fine, but ONLY ONE *must* be finished per month to "complete" the Challenge for the Month.
• A starting pic is required. Any model that is incomplete, even those that only require basing, are eligible for this Challenge.
• A finished pic is also required, this MUST be completed to your standards, AND the model MUST be based.

 

If you know what you'd like to pledge, pop this pip in your signature,



then pledge in the following format, you'll need to vow each month you wish to participate,

Each month will feature a selection of Awards,

• The Completed Badge is awarded for Completing 1+ model for the month.
• The Seriously Badge is awarded for Completing 5+ models in a month
• The Artificer Badge is arbitrarily awarded to models I find impressive each month
• The Speed Daemon is awarded for Completing a model within 24hrs
• The Last Minute Badge is awarded for Completing your vow on the last day of the month
• The Overtime Badge is awarded for Completing your vow on the 1st or 2nd of the following month
• The Stubborn Badge is awarded for Completing a previous vowed but uncompleted model
• The Favourite is awarded for my top pick each month

 

You may make up to two Plodding Along Vows for the year, one for the first six months, and one for the second six months. These are intended for larger, multiple month projects, or an Army goal for the year.

All badges will upgrade Black, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, as they are earned multiple times.



Last year saw the introduction of the Challenge+ mini-challenge, I did not complete mine, and will continue it this year, so it is open for others to continue theirs, or for people to start fresh.

 

 

Challenge+ features four, 3 Month long Challenges, one each for the four Quarters of the year.

 

The first Challenge, running from January to December is the What if? Challenge. If you choose to take up this Challenge, you will be creating (kind of) a custom unit for the game. You will need to take an existing unit entry from one Codex, and shoe-horn it into another. For example, I will be doing;

What if the Tau weren't incompetent in Close Quarters Combat? What if they had an Assault Intercessor type unit?

Once you have chosen your unit swap, you will need to complete two tasks, the first is to re-name the unit with a suitable name for the new Faction, as well as any Wargear and Special Abilities they may have. Secondly you will need to model and paint a single model from your created unit.

Please keep the units to infantry sized models, no Tanks or Independent Characters.

Please choose different proper Factions, please don't do What if? Dark Angels had this Blood Angels unit, or Space Wolves unit etc.

 

The second Challenge Copy Cat, running from April to December, is a little easier. You must choose one of the other What if? entries and model a single model from that new unit.

 

The third Challenge, Wordsmith, running from July to December requires a small short story of an interaction (peaceful, or not...) between the two models / units you have completed in the What if? and Copy Cat Challenges. I'm not going to put a word limit on these, but think 300 - 500 words or so (I won't be counting though).

 

The fourth and final Challenge, running from October to December is to place the two models you have created, onto / into a scenic diorama base, showing or referencing details from the Wordsmith Challenge. I recommend looking at a 80mm or 90mm base for this, as I've found 60mm a little crowded.

 

Lastly for anyone who manages to complete all four Challenges by Years End, the Challenge+ Veteran Badge will be awarded.

The Challenges should be completed in order, however, as you can see from the timing of each Challenge, once the Challenge has started it remains open for the rest of the year to allow newcomers to pick up the Challenge+ challenges if they so desire.

When you pledge to a Challenge+ challenge, or complete a Challenge+ challenge, please place the correct badge from above into your post for easier identification so that I don't miss anything. I will re-post the badges with each new month for ease of access.

I don't know what I'll start off with, as I'm still building stuff, but I do know what I can do for my Plodding Along vow this year. It will be a combination of a new army that I got over Xmas, some random stuff, and the Imperium contents for this year up to...May I believe. So, my Plodding Along vow for 2023 is the following-

I, Cleon, vow to complete all twelve months of the 12 Months of Hobby 2023. 

 

What I really need to do is push on with some of the models that are too big for me to be confident of completing in a single month, so I'll start off with a Plodding along vow (I'll add pics of each element as I assemble it) of my backlog of large models:

3. Magnus The Red
4. A Grey Knight Stormraven

I'll also be continually adding to my Zone Mortalis/Boarding action table terrain with the hope of getting enough for a fully  painted table to game on at some point this year.

 

I'll also be doing something each month, but maybe less than last year when I'm working on the larger models. Not sure what/when I'll get January in as I'm currently waiting for the rail strikes to end to get back after Christmas awa and then need good enough weather to spray, but if all goes to plan is should be a set of Cultists for my Thousand sons and another 10 HH MK3 EC Tacticals.

I would like to join again in 2023.

There is still much to be done...

 

I, Valkia the Bloody, vow to keep going with the challenge to finish my accumulated models and pledge my paintbrushes for the greater glory of Khorne in 2023.

For the month of January, I vow to complete a Primaris Intercessor Kill Team and hopefully some more terrain.

 

 

As for ongoing projects in 2023:

- I still have to complete all that lovely Gallowdark terrain

- I want to continue with my Night Lords army (there are still ~ 40 odd cultists, a Forgefiend, 10 Raptors and all of my leading circle of villains to be done)

- I would like to get stuck in with my Inquisitor and Assassin collection which has sat on my shelf for far too long and they keep threatening me with Exterminatus for this heresy

- There are also several units of filthy loyalist (or are they?) Primaris who keep looking at me accusingly

 

Let's see how my ADHD holds up and what will inevitably distract me in 2023....

As a Sibling of the Foxes and from among the 9 tailed, operating in deep recon under alias Stolid Fox, hereby join Vulpis Virtus to the 12 months of hobby pledge to resume the success of our forces in the completed Librarium Painting Challenge campaign.

 

For the Month of January we shall first deploy in the defensive Imperium Theatre. In doing so we pursue these objectives:
 

Recruiting a Tech Priest Dominus to support our campaign (1x Tech Priest Dominus, Issue 26)
Identify and Neutralize the Necron threat codenamed "Flayed Ones" (5x Flayed Ones, Issue 15)
Secure Power for our logistics base (Haemotrope Reactor, Issue 27)

 

Additional force deployments or targets of opportunity may be acquired depending on progress and naval deployment availability. Will inform command if available.

 

Further, we are additionally dedicating ourselves for a long term campaign (code name 'Plodding One') towards recon on the space hulk code name "Gallowdark" recently spotted in the operations area. I, andes, am excited to embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge for 2023 (Thanks, @Grotsmasha! WAAAGH!!). For the month of January I pledge to complete the final three Orks for my Kommando Kill Team.

Another year already.

 

I don’t know if monthly painting is going to work in the coming year. One project I really want to get to grips with is conversion heavy and may not get as far as painting for a good while. The local store has also shifted a bit into AoS so for part of the year I expect I will be working on stuff for that.

 

So while my monthly participation is likely to be a bit hit and miss I do intend to complete a Plodding along Vow for once. Here goes nothing.

 

 

I, Trokair, embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge, vowing a plodding along project to build, convert and paint round about a 1,000p for my 7^th Rhûnish Dragoons project.

 

The rough plan is a Patroll Detahcment with somethign along the line of:

1 Lord Solar conversion

2 Armoured Fist Squads (Infantry squad + Chimera)

1 Rough Rider Squad

1 Centrepiece Tank – probably the new Rogal, but maybe just a Leman

+ Whatever takes my fancy to round this out.

 

So far I have painted one Melta Hellound and one Enginseer conversion as tank and infantry colour tests. I have also converted the first Armoured Fist squad a little while ago and will start the painting process for the year with them. Hopefully by the time they are done the Codex is out proper and I can convert the next lot.

 

I’ll post a starting picture once they are undercoated, as the conversions themselves are from Octoberish.

Hi  @Grotsmasha, thanks for running the challenge again. Perhaps you can do a little randomizer for me. I would like to pledge a Badab War Marine.  D3 for Row, D6 for Column.  I really don't see how I can do Tiger Claws, so if that comes up, you can choose a chapter you like instead.  For the other tricky ones I reserve the right to make it Deathwatch or a Heresy marine of the parent legion with heraldry that could be the inspiration for the later founding.  Hence I'll choose the model only after I know the chapter. Cheers!
