Your Imperial fists, I mean Votann look awesome. :P

I just got my 1st box of warriors, waiting on some paint but I am excited to play them. I have a lot to go through and work on but I hope we see some sort of release and codex later this year. I know it's not on the horizon yet, but fingers crossed.

I really could do with more Votann Lore. Just love learning about these guys. And there isn't enough yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

First double Hekaton was a success!

Played vs Chaos (Dread Talons for some reason - probably won't see them again lol). Primary is the 'units can Guard for extra points next turn if they survive' one?

Really love how this list plays. It's forgiving, straightforward and flexible.

2100pts (Narrative home game):

Brokhyr + 6 Thunderkyn (Grav)

Kahl + 10 Hearthkyn (Hekaton)

Grimnyr + 10 Hearthkyn (infantry)

Einhyr + 5 Hearthguard (DS)

5 Hearthguard (DS)

10 Yaegirs

3x5 Beserks (2 Sagitaurs and Hekaton 2)

1x3 Pioneers

Here's my left flank deployment.

large.IMG_9264.jpeg.03f3d5acae26d195622c

And deployment right:

large.IMG_9265.jpeg.dcca9d9f093e73b00f7f

Opponent gets turn 1 and moves 2x5 Possessed out to tap middle and right. Whiffs shooting pretty much - 3 damage on the flying Hekaton from a Defiler. Defiler kills a couple Yaegirs maybe?

My turn 1 I merk the Possessed and send Pioneers in to mess with Rhino on their flank which I nearly destroy with Sagitaur. I'm up 4 on secondaries here.

Opponent Turn 2 sees Terminators and Lord charge left Hekaton from DS, plink a few wounds on. Raptors and Lord AND Daemon Prince arrive in my DZ to threaten home objective next turn. Yaegirs die from dismounting Havocs and Legionaries. Pioneers die to legionaries charging out of Rhino they tapped, and 5 more charge the Sagitaur I tapped the objective with, and plink a couple wounds on it. Enemy Forgefiend, lascannon Havocs, Defiler all pretty much flub shooting at my Hekatons again.

My turn 2 basically everything fails their leadership checks on the flanks, so I only score centre. Also my vehicles on left don't fall back from the terminators and legionaries, but fire into combat and get some kills, and the Hekaton fires out of melee to kill 5 Legionaries that killed Pioneers. Legionaries on Sagituar and Terminator each take a unit of 5 Beserks on the chin, and 5 hearthguard make the charge on to terminators from Deep-Strike.

large.IMG_9269a.jpg.bdf95dbd297400cc73e5

I unleash the thunderkyn on 5 legionaries threatening right, killing all 5. Heathguard and Einhyr make their charge into the Havocs on that flank as well, and kill a couple. The Beserks that jumped out there while their sagitaur fell back don't make their charge tho. In centre the Kahl Guard jump out and I foolishly give them the Sustained strat to shoot on the forgefiend, but it randomly pay off when I roll a 6 to hit on their rail rifle to push 10 wounds on it and kill it. The centre Hekaton also ruins the lascannon Havocs.

large.IMG_9268a.jpg.6fad7cf7d03283205ed9

Opponent turn sees and Defiler shoots and then piles in on right Heathguard w/ Einhyr, killing all 5, but the Einhyr smashes it to bits in return. Raptors launch toward my home objective, but I Overwatch with Thunderkyn and kill them all except their Lord. Lord and remaining 2 terminators die to Beserks on right and I opponent conceded right there with just 20 cultists, 2 rhinos, 3 havocs, Chaos Lord and a daemon prince left while haven't lost a vehicle yet and I've got the run of the middle objectives.

In future I think 5 hearthguard + Kahl are going in Hekaton instead of 10 Hearthkyn, who will just be relegated to rear screen, and eventual replacement.

Till next time!

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

New Codex, who dis?

Gonna take the Kyn for a spin this week or next... List is staying pretty much where it was until I can get some Jacks going:

Needgard: (1995pts)

Brokhyr

E-Champ (Speculator)

Grimnyr (Dead reckoning)

Uthar - Warlord

2x10 Hearthkyn

1x Kapricus Carrier (gunhauler)

1x Sagitaur

2x3 Thunderkyn

2x5 Beserks

2x Hekaton

1x3 Pioneers

1x10 Yaegirs

1x10 Hearthguard

Beserks and 5 warriors / Brok in each Hekaton are the anvils, and then Hearthguard hammer drops, ideally with range to kill something with plasma and charge something else with that 8" re-rolling. I know people are a bit down on the Hearthguard, but if you think of them more like bladeguard than terminators they still make sense to me at 135/5 with plasma. Slapping Speculator in there is particularly amusing so you start wounding the whole game with plasma on 4+ or better, so we'll see how they get on.

2 options in this list I'm considering:  drop all enhancements to pick up Memnyr, or drop Speculator and Brokhyr for 5 more Beserks. My suspicion is that Memnyr isn't better than speculator and reckoning if I have no Jacks, and I kinda just like the Brok more than third unit of Beserks.

Anyhow - interested to hear about your first games, and I'll report on this one here when it's time.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Let us know how it goes. I pre ordered but still haven't gotten any models or anything else. lol  before you make changes I would see how your games go and see what weakness it has and how to address that.

Seems like a solid list!

The only thing Im hearing about online is that with Needgard once you go to fortify is hard to get out of it, and sometimes is advantageous to go to 1st state and get re roll charges and/or shoot into objectives.

Good luck and keep us posted!

11 minutes ago, Chaplain Lucifer said:

fortify is hard to get out of

I think E-Champ Speculator is there for precisely that reason; drop up to 6YP without spending CP if you can shoot and fight, and it makes that unit actually pretty terrifying which it should be for the price. Also seems to make the Memnyr slightly less important since all he does is take up space and add 1 YP per turn basically... So that's nice.

Galbers win!

2100 points list as above -  Linchpin vs Sisters

I put Beserks in all the transports and Thunders in Hekatons and walked Uthar and Grimnyr in their units up behind. Pioneers screened rear and Yaegirs on flanks. Hearthguard were only reserves.

I got first turn and moved Hekatons toward flank objectives but denied centre, just lining up Sagitaur there but also threatening there with right Hekaton. Thunderkyn jumped out and them and Hekas etc. killed a Castigator on the right and a Rhino and 5 Sisters right centre. Scored 5 on Extend and +1CP from Assassinate.

Enemy turn 1 I lose Right Heka, and Carrier on right objective, but Vahl fails charge on Thunderkyn/Ironmaster. Left Immolator flattens 3 Yaegirs and I lose that point.

I score 8 Primary turn 2, and drop Hearthguard on Vahl, spending 6 YP to murder her bodyguard with plasma and thunderkyn and then punching her to death:

large.Hearthguard_punch.jpeg.a355be75dec

I also get Uthar and a few warriors on centre, and right and centre Beserks start slamming Sisters into the ground there:

large.Beserk_charge.jpeg.df1b5d285fa4ddc

On the left the Heka and Thunderkyn kill the Immolator and Beserks wipe the contents, taking back that objective.

Opponent scores 3 Primary, and is able to push me back from left with third Castigator and some Retributors, but I'm all over centre and he doesn't make progress elsewhere.

I score 13 Primary, and just keep pinging away on his Castigators but effectively route his infantry, and then Hearthguard a) kill 10 Sisters on their flank and b) make the 8" charge on to his home 3 arco-flagellants, and we shake hands.

He's never killed a Hekaton before but was able to this time, so I guess that's progress? I don't think he'll let Vahl get sniped like that again though either... And I'm basically not likely taking the full Hearthguard package much once my 12 Steeljacks are ready... That's gonna look like:

Brokhyr (A perfectly decent unit still I think, though points allowing 3 more Thunderkyn probably better for a centre beamer unit)

Einhyr

Memnyr: Speculator

Uthar

Hearthkyn Warriors (+Uthar) - sticky is never bad

Carrier

Sagitaur

2x3 Thunderkyn

2x5 Beserks (Sagitaur and 1 Hekaton w/ Master + Thunderkyn)

1x5 Hearthguard (DS)

2x Hekaton (I like 1 rail 1 beam)

1x3 Pioneers

1x10 Yaegirs

1x6 Volkite Steeljacks

2x3 Melee Steeljacks (1 in Hekaton, one Reserved)

Basically this is just a bit more dynamic than the big swing of 10 Hearthguard + Speculator... This year I'll probably get a proper Carrier and third Thunderkyn for the flex, but honestly the army feels great even without Steeljacks or Thunderkyn spam.

Anyway - strong inspiration to get those Steeljacks painted up... I won't make it in time for next week, but likely the one after.

Till then!

The Good Doctor.

Steeljacks!

large.IMG_0136.jpeg.c3d00189c2ac7e104173

Just got the last 3 of these finished and I'm out the door in a minute for my first game with them... My list is basically as above except I'm short the second 3 melee steeljacks who are replaced by some Beserks.

I'll report back on the game later on!

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Galberkin Win!

Quick game summary as I neglected to take an pics...

Played into Death Guard, Take and Hold; Hammer and Anvil and High Octane (only came up a couple times)

I deployed a fort and support transport each flank. Ironmaster + Thunderkyn were in the left fort, and then Yaegir infiltrated kinda halfway between right and centre objectives. Warriors and shooty Steeljacks generally centre, with Pioneers screening rear.

I got first turn and caught Marked for Death where he chose his 2 PBCs chilling behind a ruin. I get Carrier on right, Sagitaur left and Yaegirs centre, but I'm out of range mostly so I can just peel off 4 wounds apiece from the PBCs. I uncharacteristically hold Marked for Death assuming I'll score it once Thunderkyn can get the 24" on to the PBCs.

He rocks out and pushes me off left by killing Sagitaur and camping Spawn and Rhino, right with sheer shooting, and then centre by killing 3 Yaegirs and parking another Rhino there. He scores 9 on Extend and something else.

I pull Engage On All Fronts and line up to hit back. I walk melee Steeljacks on to right objective (also for engage) and then deep-strike Einhyr deep left to max those points (they fail their charge, but it's fine...). I jump out Thunderkyn right and they and their fort kill a PBC for Marked for Death. Then the right Thunderkyn kill centre Rhino, I kill a couple of the marines inside with cannon fire and then go all-in on Speculator Steeljacks shooting to remove that centre unit (it was 7+character). On the left I flub one of the Beserks' charges into the Rhino, but the other gets in on the lone Spawn and kills him but 2 die to those dang mortals.

His turn he also scores just 5 Primary and I brace for impact. His Daemon Prince pops out on right to threaten Steeljacks, he uses a Hauler to steal centre from my 2 Yaegirs (who also just die moments later from drone cannon), and the surviving Plague marines jump out of their Rhino to grab left. His shooting does some damage to left fort, kills 3 shooty Steeljacks and a hearthguard.

His failed charge on right steeljacks leaves me to score 10 at top of 3, and I know I have to gun it. Heavy bolt cannons ignoring cover absolutely slap left plague marines, and all those plague marines die. Last PBC takes a bit more damage from beam, but Heathguard fail their charge on to it. Melee steeljacks walk over to keep Prince back, but also fail their charge (but it's a move block). Thunderkyn walk on to right objective as they go. Shooty Steeljacks walk on centre to steal it from a hauler, and surviving Beserk over there charge and kill Rhino, and tap a drone behind.

Opponent scores 5 primary turn 3, and Deathshroud show up and kill right thunderkyn while Prince charges and kills... 1 steeljack lol. He kills a couple randos, but I come into turn 4 scoring 10 primary again, and then use my turn to kill his PBC with hearthguard charge and clear right and centre objectives entirely while. I also pull back Steeljacks with ordered retreat and alongside charging Beserks on to Deathshroud I'm able to take the point from him by 1 OC. He's pushed back to 5 primary on turn 4 and he clears right with Prince and Shroud, but he's completely gassed otherwise with just a hauler about to get merked, 4 poxwalkers on his home looking down an E-Champ and friends, and when I score 15 Primary turn 5 he concedes.

In sum... going to round 5 is always a treat and I was glad not to have to face Morty. When he gets a second deathshroud unit I'm going to be afraid.

The Good Doctor.

Well, it's been too long. Getting in a game with the final 3 steeljacks to make an even 12... Also got an iron-thunderkyn out of this little project so I have a more comfy 'non-standard' converted unit.

Einhyr

Memnyr

Uthar

1x Hearthkyn

Carrier

Sagitaur

2x3 Thunderkyn

3x5 Beserks

1x5 Hearthguard

2x Hekaton

1x3 Pioneers

1x Yaegirs

1x6 Steeljacks / volkanite

2x3 Steeljacks / melee

I'll post after-action tonight or tomorrow.

Another win for the Kyn!

This army sings a joyful song of destruction in every phase. It's efficient, direct, and tough.

Quarters deployment, The Ritual (though nobody ever took the time to do it).

Galbers go second, so enemy jumps pair of broadsides on to outside angles of concealed centre Hekaton, and almost kills it (down to 4 wounds). Left, a Ghostkeel sabotages a building while stealth team jumps on left objective, doing no damage to Pioneers. Right, a trickle of fire kills 2 Yaegirs but enemy does not reach the objective with Devilfish advance. Another Devilfish touches centre.

Galber turn 1 and I peak around to gun for his Stormsurge camping just forward of enemy home (which should have moved in his 1st turn IMO because he could have peaked my right Hekaton). Rail cannon + Sagitaur + disembarking Thunderkyn bring it down to 5 wounds. Disembarking Beserks plus Kapricus charge but do not kill centre Devilfish. Steeljacks barely dent left Broadside (4+ vs mortals : ( ). Pioneers roll up on stealth team left, kill 3 and charge remainder but stab none. Kapricus swings around left to hedge objective push next turn. Right Yaegirs walk over and Cleanse.

Turn 2, enemy shooting falls pretty flat! He drops Commander and Sunforge team in my rear to pick up behind enemy lines, but their shots fail into Hekaton. The rest of the army does finish off the centre Hekaton, but only after a flurry of misses and hard 6+ saves (I rolled 4 six saves in a row), so ultimately the second Heka survives the hammerhead rail with 6 wounds after all that. Centre he pulls off Beserks and kills 3 of them. His snap fire kills only 1 Yaegir on right but he takes the objective with devilfish. Left Ghostkeel and Starscythe battlesuits flub on the bikes and Ghostkheel can't even kill one on the charge to take the point, leaving me 5 points for turn 2.

Galber turn 2 and it's go time. Recover Assets and Bring it Down. Uthar and co. back up and ineffectually assault Sunforge team while 3 Steeljacks walk on back there for Recover. 3 more Steeljacks walk on right for Recover, and Kapricus drives into enemy deployment zone for full points.

Thunderkyn and Beserks step out of right Hekaton to bail out the Yaegirs there, easily smoking the devilfish and pushing Breachers off:

large.GvsT_T3R.jpeg.3e0e8bc5d148d880662d

Their Hekaton swings toward centre and nukes the Hammerhead:

large.GalberVTau_T3F.jpeg.307d672e352d13

Hearthguard come down and charge and kill Ghostkeel off left flank.

Steeljacks account for a single Starscythe:

GalberVtau_T3L.jpeg

Centre Thunderkyn and Sagitaur team up to bring down Stormsurge.

Sagitaur Beserks get out and flip a Devilfish:

large.GalberVTau_T3C.jpeg.511089971110f1

At this point I'm up like 3 points from my 5 Primary.

Enemy gets no Primary in turn 3. They plink off a couple Hearthguard on left but can't take it away from me. The Breachers kill the full unit of Beserks on centre, but I retain it. Sunforge kill a couple hearthkyn but they're stymied into the mass of bodies. On the right the Breachers kill 5 more beserks, and charge to take back the objective with their high OC.

My turn 3 I thus get 10 primary, and I pull Engage plus Locus so the Kapricus and contents can spike in the end zone for full secondary points. Enemy concedes as I've now got multiple units on all objectives and he's about to lose his shirt.

It was pretty hairy at the start and I could have been on the back foot really easily if he'd a) got any kind of angle from stormsurge off the top or b) killed either of the Hekatons or the bikes when he needed to.

The Kapricus was an absolute scoring machine in the this... Definitely a legit one is on the horizon, as at present I just have a Kharadron gunhauler for it.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.
