Sword Brethren Weapon Loadout?

I'm thinking of building a 10 man squad of Sword Brethren, and then combat squading them in a squad with the lightning claws and another with the thunder hammers to specialize against light and heavy targets.   What weapons should the remaining 8 SB have?  Swords and Mauls?

Mauls are pretty bad. They give +3 str, which puts us at S7. The only thing that gives a bonus to is fighting against T6 (wound on 3+) or T7 (wound on 4+) units. Those kinds of units will generally have an armor save where the AP-1 does virtually nothing. Even most T3 units won't really care about AP-1.

 

An axe will get you to S6 (still wounding t3 on 2+), and the AP-2 will actually be effective against many kinds of models, some of them, stripping away their armor save entirely, while still wounding T5 on 3+.

 

However, as BBF said, swords are probably still best. Our lists generally run Helbrecht, and his +1 str aura puts the swords at S6, which is a good threshold, as we saw with the axes. Yah, he does that to axes and mauls, but as we saw with mauls, S7 on axes isn't much, and with mauls AP-1 isn't going to do anything against any T8 unit, or even the T4's you'd be wounding on 2's. However, a sword wielder at S6 AP-3 (with Helbrecht around) can shred many units. Even at S5, they're still pretty great.
