Following the Balance Dataslate in Arks of Omen, Marines of all flavours got a lot of free gear. I was wondering how folk are handling this?

  • WYSIWYG - so sticking with a chainsword if that's what the model has, or breaking down and rebuilding stuff?
  • Counts-as - how are you opponents reacting to this? Does if matter if the model had an illegal loadout to begin with (some older ones are like this)
  • What about models which don't have something showing. Such as a Sergeant with a ranged weapon and an auspex. Are you giving them a "hidden" weapon now we can?

I never min-maxed so no problems on my (chaotic) side.

WYS... Yes, for models that have significant loadout. Your double pistol guy is a bolter in one game and a chainsword guy in another. No problem. Your claw Terminator is now a shield Hammer Guy because its free? Get the pliers and glue please.

Old Models with illegal loadout? Seeing as my chainsword/Plasma pistol guy is technically illegal i dont mind.

Hidden weapons: glue a matching Item to the backpack, just like choosen or the plague marine champions plasma gun.

- WYSIWYG - Thank you Sir, but no Sir... I used to consider it always eons ago, but with so much changes now and in the near future, I will pass for a while, until stuff got stabilized under 10th Ed AND codices being reedited

- Count as - most of the time it is the case, but as stated by @Masterdeath, the count as should not be too extreme: not swapping a plams pistol or getting a combiweapon instead of a strombolter is fine most of time, using bolt pistols as proxi heavy bolter does not fall in the accetability range however... You see the main idea. Generally speaking most oponents are OK with this if the List is clear and if the Model is well identified. We use snall collour sticker on bases on that purpose so that there is a red spot reminding that What You See Is Not What You Get.

- Well, I have never been confronted to this case so far. So I pass.

Sumary: I use Count as and fellow gamers are fine with it, most of the time because they have the same issues. A pregame agreement is most of the time enough. Game club rules state this and you are aware before joining a game that this is something considered in our OK behaviour check list. Beer remained banned even on Senior game nights however...

PS: As I came back to the game for years witout rolling a dice, this is maybe not a point of view share by all my gaming group mambers. but most of the time the reason is economic: the closed FLGS is 2 hours drve away now and the closest GW store 4 hours... so scarity of resource of easy acess make that to rely on webstore is drying the buying pipe alittle bit. there is an intellectual limit as compulsive buying is likely to be limited in thta case. Les bits=less retooling and WYSIWYG...

I've always played it - if your model doesn't have a pistol on it, it can have any pistol. If your model does have a pistol on it, it must be that pistol.

If your model in the rules has multiple weapons (e.g, 2 pistols and chainsword) then modelling it with any 2 of its weapons is fine, but any upgrades must be displayed - e.g Heresy Destroyers have 2 bolt pistols and a chainsword, but the models themselves only come with bolt pistols, so model them with any combination you see fit. But if you give one a missile launcher or a power fist then it must be there.

3rd or 4th, I forget which, made frag and krak grenades optional upgrades and I remember various forums at the time being a bit dismayed by that for WYSIWYG purposes.

Transparency with your opponent is the key. I don't know the names of Tau weapons or Dark Eldar stuff so I wouldn't know if they were true WYSIWYG, but as long as I'm told what the weapon is and does, and that it remains the same for the entire game (which is a peril of devious counts as-ers - changing a railgun for a pulse whatever when it suits) then it's all good.

There's a degree of common sense required - like running Heresy era Terminator models with combi bolters and reaper autocannons in a 40k list; it's fine for those to count as Storm Bolter and assault cannon, IMO, and would be in a tournament setting if I was in charge.

Just act in good faith to represent what you're loading out, or be clear with notable exceptions.

It's not practical to buy a new box every 3 months when GW shifts rules/points. It takes years sometimes to build and paint a force. That doesn't play well with constant rules changes and some people have limited time and/or money.

If you're playing tournaments,  they have their own rules and requirements you can view before you sign up.
