They come and go, but at the moment I'm doing okay.  I imagine you should start seeing the first finished models in 2-3 weeks, as I can't start painting them until March 1 due to the event.

Need to decide whether to paint their skin more like humans or more like actual goats - guess I should start researching goats to see what their different colourations are.

A quick internet search indicates goat fur varies widely. So it might be fun to think of a variety of goat fur paint schemes.

At any rate, I hope nobody gets your goat.

It's Warhammer 40K - The Goatening!

Anyway, finished my first 2 goats and am pretty happy with them.

Just realized I missed doing the scars and veins on the 3 sword dude, so I'll need to go back and do those.

Here are the other 10, with some of the basic colours blocked in:

Basically, there are 2 goats of each of 6 different skin tones, of which the above are the second darkest.  I'll be giving them various colours of hair, which I'll work out as I do each of the individual models.

Thanks and no problem!  Its simply GW's bestial brown with a dark chestnut brown wash (I use a craft paint I picked up cheap - "Raw Umber" from the DecoArt Americana line).   What little highlighting I did (some limited veins on the left model - you can see a tiny bit between the fur and the hand on the front arm) I used skag brown.

BTW, I considered doing them in goat colour patterns like you suggested, but the way I'm doing more natural skin tones that didn't really work.  I do intend to make the fur in goatey colours (off white, brown, black, grey) but there really isn't enough of it (or in the right places) to show the mixed colouration on some goats.  Still, at least based on these two, they'll look fine without.

Incidentally, I discovered a pet peeve about these models - their hooves.  In researching how I should paint them to look like actual goat hooves I discovered that they don't actually have goat hooves.  Goat hooves are essentially 2 fingers with a bit of hoof at end - this makes for that distinctive pointed goat hoof.  The models instead have unpointed hooves - either have unsplit hooves (horse hooves) or larger unpointed split hooves (cattle).  So I rail at the anatomical incorrectness of my mutant human-goat hybrids!

First they take our goats' hooves. Next they'll take the goats themselves. After that, what's left? This is how it starts...

Pretending to be deranged can be fun.

Lookign forward to the finished articles; damn good start been made!

You do it so well!

Anyway, I've finished my second 2 goats - only took me 3 weeks, when I was aiming at doing them in one.  Probably would have except I had to repaint the skin of the whip goat (I gave it a reikland fleshade wash as usually do for flesh, which looked fine, but really didn't fit in with the 2 I did previously that have a much less saturated wash.  Anyway, repainted his flesh and then gave him the same dull dark brown wash as the others, and he looks much better.  Then, before I could turn to the 2nd, I got distracted assembling Emperor's Children - but finally finished it yesterday.

Another 2 weeks, another 2 goats.

This puts me half way done, which means I should be able to get them done by the end of May deadline provided I keep to my "goat a week" schedule.

Thanks to the long weekend, managed to get 2 goats in just over a week, rather than just one.  Here they are - I'm pretty happy with thm, particularly the coloured smoke on the model on the right (its even better in person, as the pink "shadows" on the upper portion are more pronounced).

Something I forgot to mention, is that, rather ironically, my goat painting had been delayed a couple of weeks ago due to my buying the Cult of the Lamb video game on steam when it was on sale, then playing the heck out of it.  Fun little game, even though I'm really bad at it.

One final point, these guys are done in Kislev Flesh, which I thought would be the most "human" of the skin tones I would use, but after the brown wash it really came out tan such that I don't think that is the case.  Not a problem, just an interesting observation.

Oh, and the mallet on the gas mask goat is the only deviation I made for all my goats from the stock model loadouts.  This model was intentded by GW to be their Nurgle goat, and stock it has a heavily corroded sword with a distintive triangle 3 pit design indicative of nurgle, which really didn't work with my force.  So I gave him the mallet instead, as it amuses me imagining him using it to whack his gas grenades (poison by the rules, reimagined by me to be primarily halucinigenic but probably incidentally toxic as well) down range.

Thanks!  I've now finished painting all my battle goats.

The ones I finished last weekend:

Those I finished this weekend:

The ones on the right in both photos are from the Black Fortress villains.

Finally, the herd all together:

Thanks!  I went more uniform in terms of gear than I did with my traitor guard, because the largest areas (in terms of size) of variation are in their skin and hair (fur?) colours.  So, while their gear is rather uniform, hopefully the other differences strike the right ballance between them looking like a unit while also looking like individuals.

Which brings to mind - I should really take a group photo of 1 of each of my main chaos "types" together once I have some of my Emperor's Children done, to show both their differences and similarities.
