How many people actually play 3e 40k regularly, yet we routinely hear it was the high point of Codex writing (as an example).

Interesting. I found the 3rd edition codices very disappointing. They were much smaller than the 2nd edition ones with substantially less fluff. They felt so cut-down compared to the ones I was used to.

Yeah, not sure I’ve heard anyone talk about 3rd - especially early 3rd - as a pinnacle of good Codex writing…

I think the high point for codexes overall was second edition but that could be because they were first and i was a teenager :D But sizeable tomes, packed with cool stuff and inspiration.

Third definitely had advantages when it came to cost and werent bad from an atmosphere and rules accessory perspective, but they lacked solid fluff and it really hampered the Dark Eldar in particular who got introduced in that era so their whole background was vibes... Really didnt help that they didnt get another codex until what, 5th or 6th edition years later? Madness! :D

This is exactly how I felt at the time. However my bookshelf proves that I bought more of those cheaper slimline codexes than I did for any other edition of the game. From a sales perspective they were a success.

The Peak of 3rd Edition was the Chaos and Imperial Guard 2nd Edition Codexes. Tau and Necrons were awesome, the Black Templars were still super rad. Cityfight was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

I had (last I packed) my 3.5 Chaos, Necrons, and Cityfight still. I dont know exactly what it is about Cityfight but I loved it, will have to go looking.

It was the first book I read that had DIY terrain in it. My dad got me Codex Imperial Guard, Cityfight, and some Cadians and paints that summer after coming back from Iraq so I’m pretty sure that’s why it’s like peak nostalgia for me. We spent all summer making silly bunkers and buildings.

Cityfight is one of the all time best Codexes, with great support in WD and the greater company to boot, My local store had a whole crapload of great terrain built for it and various campaigns running. Admittedly it also tweaked the game rules a little so it was as much a different game type as an interesting but achievable terrain variant but the book supported all of that and had reams of inspiration to boot.

Its bizarre to me that they got the "Codex Battlezone" right first* time and never just... replicated it, though planetstrike got close that hung a lot more on the pre made terrain they sold. Oh and one of the Cityfight updates was solid too, but never quite such a game changer.

*Maybe Codex Catachan and the Jungle zone was first? But they were close im sure...

I stumbled across this thread, some really interesting comments. I'm the guy that makes these videos, thought people here might appreciate one of my latest, with Rick talking about the origins of 40k.

Apologies the sound quality isn't great, I didn't have access to my usual equipment and had to make do.

Got some more videos upcoming. Last week I did some filming with Adi Wood, Perry Twins, and Rick + Jervis. Filming Bob Naismith tomorrow and John Blanche again on friday.

Hope you enjoy!

I really enjoyed those. A bit sad to know the background, or work behind the GorkaMorka.. It doesn´t really take away the fun I guess but..

I never noticed any of those troubles anyways, I absolutely love that game - as much as Mordheim of the same style, or maybe more.. Mad Max orks is just too cool and that scenario - Da Chase or whatever, so fun..

Thanks for sharing!

Hopefully they'll remake it, though that could clash with Necromunda now they've introduced vehicles?

Yeah, I think so. Afraid it won´t happen. But I don´t mind, I play and enjoy the old rules (same with Mordheim). So it is all good. ;)

but introducing similar scenarios, if they haven´t already, in Necromunda, would be a good idea. Spread that joy..
