'BEHEAD ALL LYONS 0/5 STARS'

I think there's a legitimate question of how fair a discussion of a book is when someone hate-read it over the course of a day. It takes a lot of readers AGES to actually get through a book they dislike, so a combination of a speedy read with how little they thought of it implies the kind of discussion that some Fraters won't find any value in. Also, Reddit has produced some absolute piss takes on books accompanied by a day 1 plot summary. For readers like me who value execution so highly, these early negative reviews are often the opinions of people who reduce a book to bullet points (not necessarily speaking about this specific poster,) and aren't a good metric for much of anything.

To put it in a meme-ier way: we fear the Reading Comprehension Devil has claimed another victim.

That said, the guy appears up-front about how he dislikes Lyons' other books so the YMMV is at least implicit.

Also, come now WeCHAT, you know some people are here for the updoots.

....and here I am, still huffing Reze copium ;_;

Anyhow, I scrolled over that thread and yikes, it seemed very miserable. Lots of "you confirmed my bias against this author/his take on Krieg"-type posts, as if half the sub just wanted to get approval to hate what they got presented with without ever engaging with it themselves. Last time I encountered it so obviously I was in a Star Wars subreddit...

No one quite hates Star Wars like Star Wars fans

Let's hope the 40k franchise is spared from that hater attitude becoming mainstream

To be fair, fans normally became fans because they like a setting/IP as it stands when they become fans. Start deviating away from that status quo and fans are going to moan as the thing they fell in love with is changing.

The level and type of change you accept will depend on you as an individual. For me I can accept changes like, for example, female* space marines or custodes, but a move away from grimdark dystopia to noblebright would kill my interest. Others may feel differently.

*warrants (yet another) thread of its own in right forum of course, but for me this works as I have always envisaged space marines as “other” literally transhuman who develop away from the baseline. But it means the models would therefore not actually have female characteristics.

You mean making a animated movie of a popular IP with no budget, no story, no soul and absolutely no attempt to make it watchable to non fans turned out a bad movie?

Saying that while not official, Helsreach the animated movie is for me a 'real' movie and its fantastic.

So its 50-50% on warhammer.

no story

I mean.... they had Dan bloody Abnett write the thing. Even a comic that went with the collector's edition (which is basically essential stuff they couldn't be bothered to animate as well).

But damn, they really didn't want to model anything they didn't need to. Lots of fog effects so they wouldn't need to do proper environments, and so forth.

Always put that down to budget.

You gotta love all that walking though!

I've been reading a few diverse books recently.

Lowell's Trader's Tales - I recently read em' all - are sci-fi comfort food, in which absolutely nothing happens for like three hundred pages but it happened IN SPACE so it's alright. These books have essentially no antagonists, little conflict beyond market forces and are generally feel-good. I dunno if I'd recommend them, but it was a bit of OK.

Blackmore's Mountain Man is zombies IN CANADA. Entertaining enough that I'll probably keep reading: I like zombies, I like survival guff, I have no strong opinion regarding Canada.

Those wacky Malazan prequel books by Esslemont. It's 'more Malazan', which is always a good thing, and shows us the two major figures behind the Empire. I loved it, it's fun.

Just finished Lords of Excess. It was good but not unmissable.

With the BL well running very dry are you guys reading anything else good at the minute? Open to any suggestions.

I finished the Southern Reach trilogy recently. It's a fantastic story and the fourth book is coming in September. Besides that, been binging Gaunts Ghosts, almost done with the Lost Omnibus. And in between all that catching up on One Piece and JJK.

Not sure if you’ve already read it, but I just finished Longshot by Rob Young and thought it was good. I’d say that most of the Astra Militarum series that BL is running currently is above average. Won’t comment on either of the Catachan novels as I haven’t read them yet but both seemed to have been decently well received.

Longshot is underrated imho

I could not finish Lord of Excess. I dunno why. It wasn't a slog, but I just forgot about it

Morvenn Vahl: Spear of Faith LE finally goes up for pre-order on Saturday.

(edit: Damn Darkhorse, you're quick lol)

I'm just there for pre-orders to see if I can finally buy the Night Lords Kill Team. Another week, another disappointment

Remember how Dan Annett was also advertised to do the story for darktide, which also...lacked? Kinda funny that outside of Gaunts Ghosts and inquisitor stuff, his work isnt really a byword for quality.

His 2000Ad work is great and I liked the two non-GW novels of his I read- Triumff and Embedded. Legion and Brothers of the Snake are firm favourites. Plus he wrote the single greatest line in all 30k. You already know which one I'm talking about.

Should have clarified that for 40k stuff, no idea what his writings like for other stuff.

Brotherhood of the snake is incredibly dated, and I remember a lot of iffiness when reading it 16 years ago. And I basically liked everything I read when I was 14, battle for the abyss and all.

Legion is good, for the same reason GG and his inquisitor stuff is good. It's about humans, with some intrigue, and marines used as plot devices rather than characters. He only writes his (very strong) strengths in it.

And if you're talking about "I was there the day Horus..." I'll politely disagree on it being the greatest.

I will admit that the darktide thing probably isn't his fault. I think he mainly did backstory, and they jettisoned anything important to try and get in the half baked live service model. Probably cut up any story beats for seasonal updates, but were forced to finish the game due to backlash.

So apart from those 25 (TWENTY FIVE) novels, you don’t rate him?

Ya, his other 10 or so books that are marine focussed are books I don't really rate.

So when Dark Chaplain expressed his suprise that Ultramarine's story was bad despite being written by Dan Annett its like, look at his track record. If it's not about humans, the books not great. If it requires building off of preexisting character traits, standards, or established behaviors that weren't set down by Dan, forget about it entirely.
