Legions Imperialis - New Year, new army (but it's still Ultramarines) - LI bits and bobs

Recommended Posts

So, I am jumping on the LI bandwagon.....

I never played Epic, I always wanted to but the models didn't really appeal to me at the time. Then Titanicus came out and I loved the models and bought the big starter set but they have sat in a cupboard since....

When Legions Imperialis came out it piqued my interest and my gaming group have gone full in with it so I thought "why not?". The starter set seemed reasonable, the minis themselves I am still not sure on.

However, now I have started them I can maybe see why they are not as cheap as I thought they would be, they are super detailed (but possibly more than they need to be?) and are lovely little kits.

I started with the Astartes but couldn't resist trying some tanks first as I know the infantry will be the most basic of paint jobs.

So, so far I have just finished 10 very tiny Rhinos and made a start on 4 also very tiny Kratos.

I have to say, I'm having fun with them although I didn't particularly enjoy the building process. It's also mind boggling that these mini minis are quicker to paint than they are to assemble....

Nice!  Have you started any infantry? Looking forward to seeing more of what you've painted!

Not yet, started glueing them all to lolly sticks and then realised don't need to do that for all of them...... :) I think the infantry will need to be super basic. I was planing to use contrast paints but getting a good colour match is proving tricky (a 50/50 mix of Ultramarines blue / Asurmen Blue works but I can't be bothered mixing it for hundreds of infantry....) so I reckon it'll be Vallejo spray, quick wash and then drybrush. But then again, we'll see, lol.

Looking really good there  what colours you going for with the Titans?

Gonna be Legio Astorum, and House Terryn Knights, just because that matches my 32mm Heresy stuff and because of their association with Ultras.

But, I might also do some other Houses/Legios as you can mix them in in Legions Imperialis. :)

They look really good  I'm tempted by a squadron of tiny Predators as a desk ornament, but can't really justify it ...

Get a Vallejo 35ml mixing bottle, and pour one pot each of Ultramarines Blue and Asurmen Blue into it?

Small (pun intended) update, but I forgot to take pics of the infantry. I have quite a few bases painted so will get (terrible) pics of those too....

I now have 998 points painted and had my first game against World Eaters - short review, it's a brutal game, things move unexpectedly fast and World Eaters are terrifying in close combat. My Ultras were slaughtered. However, I learned that my best CC unit is my Kratos..... I need way more infantry..... troops shouldn't stay in tanks..... Prdeators and Sicarans are ace.....

More painting progress. I decided to go the lolly stick route painting infantry, it's way easier than on-sprue. Predators are done except decals and tank commander. I al realise I really like tanks and want more.....

Weirdly, the Predators are the official GW plastics from the starter set (I ended up buying 2 sets) but they do seem to have print lines on the turrets....

Tried to get pics of infantry bases so far but my phone is awful. Nothing special about these though. Decided as you end up needing so many there wasn't much point spending ages on them so these are quick wash and dry brush.

Well that's interesting...I'd completely missed that there were Predators in the starter box... (I blame GW's web site )

I think you're probably right about the infantry - there's lots of them, and they're very small. I seem to remember the Studio armies took a similar approach back in the day?
