Been pretty hard to get motivated for paint time the last couple of weeks. The wife has been feeling under the weather and is having a hard time getting over the flu, so I've been on full time daddy duty for the whole month. By the time I've gotten them all to bed, I haven't been able to bring myself to do anything more than pass out haha.

That being said, she's been feeling better the last few days and I've made progress!

Here are a couple of the first DW Terminator Squad before applying oil washes to sit overnight.

Also I'm like 90% sure there's a better way to do this. But if it's dumb but it works, then it's not dumb haha

Finished the 5x Deathwing Terminators tonight! Really pleased with how they turned out

Also got a little bit of progress done on Azrael, sword blade is done and I think all the gold portions are done. Should be able to get him to the wash stage tomorrow night.

Also, I'm tempted to just rip the banner off and pretending it never existed. Thoughts on that?

The terminators came out well. I like the snowy feet

On Azrael's back-banner ... personally, I've never been a fan of them ... I suppose the question is, how easy is it to remove, are you going to need to do a lot of fixing up, and will you want the banner later?

What banner? I see no banners here?!

Azrael is all finished up! I left the oil wash on their a bit long, so had to really scrub in a few places to clean it back up. Otherwise, very happy with the result. Considering I was too lazy to do the Watcher model on the base... it's waaaay too big. Who knows, maybe once I clear my backlog I'll add him.

...because that'll ever happen...

Next up are a few assault intercessors, aggressors, a LT and a Judiciar

That's a very interesting take on Dark Angels. What makes the models stand aut is the aesthetics which; I find the models to be very understated, almost austere, especially with the dulled metallics, but all of this contributes to a very gritty, no-frills, realistic feel. Personally, I dig it.

What did you use for the snow effect?

AK Wargames Terrain. A local guy had recommended them and I've really liked them so far. The mud takes forever to dry, but the snow has set pretty well within an hour or so. One of the local stores stocks it too, so I don't have to go the Amazon route.

Got some models assembled and primed. Learning from my hilariously bad mistake of doing the gray/black and THEN the red, I started out this time with the red, since it'll tape over much easier haha

Currently working on a Judiciar, LT w/combi weapon, apothecary biologis, 3x aggressors, and 5x assault intercessors.

Not sure why DA have jawas but whatever UTINNI!

Next step will be brushing black over all the red overspray, then building the dark/light grays on the armor.

Lot of progress tonight on all 11 marine models. There's a bit of touch ups needed on the red (including a big chunk pulled up by the painter tape on a shoulderpad), but the red, cover the red, then blacks worked out much better than the abominable taping needed on the DW termies.

I kept having nozzle clogs on the lightest gray (dawnstone), so some of the models are a bit more speckled on the single light streak, but the washes should hide some of the sins.

Also pretty happy how the apothecary biologis turned out. Built the armor from dawnstone > vallejo pale gray > proacryl titanium white for the shine streak

Your Azrael look awesome and yeah, getting rid of the banner was the good call I think.

I'm really not a fan of the judiciar original head, so the hooded one is a great choice, bring back the red of the robe too!

Pretty great for loyalist dogs

With you saying about clogs, whitish colours tend to do this - are you adding any flow improver?

Yeah, I use a few drops of that in the mix before plopping it in. I hadn't done a thorough enough clean from the last time I'd done varnish through haha

A little bit of progress here, each night I'm like "surely only one more day" and then dash those hopes and dreams.

A few representative samples of the group.

Aggressors, I may be stretching the limits of what microsol can do with that decal haha. We'll give it another application or two tomorrow. As soon as decals are done, on goes the varnish and then the overnight wash n clean.

Assault intercessors I've got a good (I hope)  plan on how to make the chainswords pop a bit. I'll be giving it a go while waiting for decals to seal properly on the aggressors.

And then these boys. I'll likely do some gray contrast on the apothecary bits on the back but am undecided. Free hand Holy Globule attempt on the canister. I think I need to add some shadow on the bottom to give it a better look.

The LT I just need to finish up the grenades and do some spot fixes, so I'll probably work him on the same timeline as the aggressors. I'll likely go for simply on the blades, matte black with silver dry brush.

The satisfying part of working in lots... finishing a ton at once.

Going out of town this weekend to visit the in-laws, so this'll be the last of my productivity until early April. Finished the month strong though!

  • 2 weeks later...

Got back from a trip with the family yesterday and am back at it today.

I've got the assault intercessors just about done, to the point I'll hold off posting pics until I completely finish. Did weapon stripes, decals, oil wash application and cleanup today, so they'll dry enough to add weathering and matte varnish to call it a day on them.

Now... starting the next big batch while finishing up the AIs...

20240407_233741.thumb.jpg.fa454e27622d0a1992565eb934c355a3.jpg

I've got Asmodai, the Indomitus chaplain (with Asmodai's spare head), bladeguard ancient (waiting for a buddy to get me a slew of 3D printed DA heads), and 8 inceptors. I traded for the inceptors... was supposed to get 6... got 8... the guy I got them from was as confused as I was.

He also didn't have the flying inceptor bases, so I'm going to try to get the smoke plumes from the friend who's also printing the DA heads. In the meantime, I've mistakenly drilled the pin hold directly into their butts. So... anatomically correct marines?

Phew, a bit more work than I thought to finish up the Assault Intercessors. But before!

Got all of the reds knocked out on the next batch of models. I've got liquid mask coming tomorrow, since that seems easier than taping the shoulderpads off, considering how much cleanup I had to do last time. And let's not forget this abomination...

Spoiler

They're coming along nicely though. Trying to figure out how to split this group like I'd done with the aggressors/AIs, but need to get the mask figured out first.

20240409_000507.thumb.jpg.76c0ec50814bbb07748b5375099cce44.jpg20240409_000422.thumb.jpg.4e9d18686e37eb6cf73e471ae19f6c05.jpg20240409_000439.thumb.jpg.6b3b828a9468f7803a7862c4f781c4f3.jpg

And the Assaulty bois!

20240409_000730.thumb.jpg.2ebf370113134aecb3b665a983896cab.jpg

First time trying hazard stripes, I wanted them to look a little worn, and I'm undecided if it looks more messy than worn. Either way, the next ones I do will definitely have sword arms separate for painting.

Tried out liquid mask for the first time, and did it without testing anything and putting it on everything I had ready.

20240410_215357.thumb.jpg.1bebc6b6f643db687b8dc55050609885.jpg

Decent results, honestly. There were a few shoulders I got a little scraping on when I pulled the mask off, but the inceptors came out none the worse for wear with less touch ups than if I'd used tape.

20240410_234357.thumb.jpg.290cd45fb00a95630d3fda334ad8d316.jpg

Some spots the mask pulled up but the black/gray I'd sprayed on stayed, which was weird but easily fixed. Looked like this for any that are curious.

Screenshot_20240410_235255_Gallery.thumb.jpg.8daa05ca953b797c24f8f382f31dfb76.jpg

Much worse results on the robes on the Ancient and parts of the chaplain...

20240410_232642.thumb.jpg.827729b13cca9261efafc9cf3230ee20.jpg

Had a hard time peeling up with just my finger pads on him. So lots of touch ups will be needed on the bottom.

20240410_234457.thumb.jpg.b13550edba16262deb5f36f8ec6608f6.jpg

Missed a couple small remnants of mask on the chaplain tabard before the pic, but you can see it peeled away from the dangling chain really well. Nowhere the grip on the part above the belt so that'll need a complete redo.

All in all, probably saved about 2 hours compared to taping?

And to answer the "why didn't you just paint the shoulder pads separately" question, these were all bought second hand and assembled. Also I didn't think of it before this week. But I'll still use the second hand as the excuse.
