Magnetizing bases for a display board

Recommended Posts

I've wanted to do up a squad with a custom display board for a while, and I think I may actually do it soon. The board will be fully detailed, so it'll be a mini diorama, I suppose. I want to magnetize the bases so they stay put in the board through and bumps and jolts. Current thinking is a magnet in the board itself, with a metal washer glued in to the bases. Any input on the magnets to use? Want them to be strong enough to easily turn the board upside down (never know what a moving company will do with your stuff...) but not so strong that you risk breaking a mini when pulling it off the board.

Any input is much appreciated :)

Magnet to magnet will always work better than magnet to metal-thing, so using them on both sides is recommended.

Neodymium magnets, N52 strength (at least N42 if you can't get the 52s)

The Magnet Baron are often considered a reliable source for hobby purposes =]

Thanks, Pawl!

I was hoping to avoid needing to manage polarity, but if a magnet and washer isn't going to cut it, I'll go that route :) Thanks!

No worries! =]

For polarity just make a 'master magnet' - I have an old space marine biker torso - every magnet I ever use uses him to ensure consistency. That way every arm magnetised will fit every shoulder, hand and wrist etc.
