CSM 10th edition Possessed

This is a topic about Possessed in the 10th edition.

  • Do you use them?
  • How are you using them?
  • Do you think they perform well?
  • How do you equip them?
  • Do you attach them to any specific unit?
  • Is there a detachment that they are extra crucial?

Other Unit of the Week for Chaos Space Marines can be found in the link below.

The Dev Wounds nerf hurt them, along with the nerfs to the MoP. They are one of the few units with Icons, so they benefit from being in Pactbound. I would run them in Pactbound with the Undivided mark. Since they will get only one round of Dev Wounds, they benefit well from Profane Zeal and the re-rolls. Slaanesh is fine as well for the stratagem.

That being said, they compete with Undivided Chosen for a similar niche, so you don't see them too often in competitive lists. Chosen have the benefit of being able to attach more useful Leaders to the unit. Possessed are restricted to the MoP.

I've used Possessed from time to time in various detachments since our Codex came out. But I'm a casual gamer. They are still solid performers for me (although I often take Chosen too). I sometimes us squads of 5 and sometimes squads of 10. Possessed still contribute and often punch well above their weight.

I have to admit that I always forgot about the Possessed's dev wounds so, for me, they haven't been nerfed. (Except for one game when an opponent kept reminding me about the  ability).

Also, I never could find the points to work a Master of Posession into my lists, so his nerf has not affected me either.

Possesseds are one unit that I have fielded in all my (very few) games in 10th ed and I quite like them.  Personally, the devastating wounds nerf isn't such a big deal - not because I forget it, but because I find you really only get one good melee turn (almost always the first one) so the loss on later turns isn't such a big hit.  For me, the bigger loss of FNP from the Master of Possession.  That's not so much because a 6+ FNP was great, but because it messed with the math for 3 damage weapons, having a 42% chance of turning it to requiring 2 unsaved wounding hits to kill a model rather than one.

In a game with very few such (where even "nigh invulnerable" marines die like flies), I like that they are a pretty resilient unit - though only 3+ armour, they have an invulnerable save, 3 wounds and, importantly, higher toughness making them fairly tough - I would compare them as having similar toughness to terminators, but I haven't actually fielded any terminators.  So, between their increased resiliency, decent speed and pretty good melee punch (due largely to their D2 melee weapons), I find they make a really good infantry "pressure" unit that the enemy needs to deal with quickly and soaks up enemy fire so the rest of your army can win the game.

That said, I haven't fielded either of their 2 main competitors for the "elite infantry" slot - chosen and terminators.  As such, even though they are good in their role as infantry pressure units, I can't say whether they are they are better than that than their competitor choices.

Plus, the models look super cool, so I love having them on the table top.

Pretty dang good! Speed is always useful and they are quite efficient as early aggro trades or for second wave since their high move helps stage and hide just as much as to rush objectives early (where a tapping Rhino will be SOP). Sometimes they just blender stuff and sometimes they cop a heap of dmg3, but they invariably just get in the way and make themselves a nuisance. More self-sufficient and efficient than Chosen for me - I take 2x5 Possessed before 2x5 Chosen (though I like to take both when I can).

I don't think the MoP makes any sense for the points anymore, but Possessed are in pretty much every CSM list. Not a world ender, but still a high-quality blender... Pick a good spot for their Dmg 2 and go to work!

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.
