The Caster of the Runes is himself cast from Forge World Resin, and comes with a choice of heads: bare or helmeted. He isn’t the only power-armoured reveal waiting to deploy: check back next week for another Heresy Thursday, which is guaranteed to feature pauldrons.

I like how it incorporates elements of a variety of armour marks to create a sort of amalgamation, very fitting for Mk5-ish.

Mk2 chestpiece, Mk3 Shins, Mk4 Kneedpads, Mk6 backpack exhausts, similar shoulder pad stylings to 40k chaos marines,

Edit: also someone on the design team played the Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone expansion

For reference, this knocks another Legion-specific Consul off the list, it seemed FW were working through them prior to Heresy Thursday going on hiatus. We're still waiting on:

  • DA Paladin
  • EC Phoenix Warden
  • IF Castellan
  • WB Diabloist
  • SW Speaker of the Dead
  • SW Caster of Runes

That head sculpt is really, really good.

The model itself is generally continues the lovely etched patterns from the SW Praetor, the unique helmet is also wonderful. It has the suggestion of wolfishness without being ridiculous.

I really hope the 40k SW range takes some cues from this and the Praetor, especially the etching.

Also the Pack Thegn.

2023 ended with a slew of Consul resins. Stands to reason 2024 will as well.

I really miss the way Heresy stuff used to look and feel.

It's a fantastic model, but it just doesn't feel Heresy to me.. at least the way it used to feel before plastic.

I don't know if it's the super clean lines or what, but it just doesn't feel like 30K to me.

Maybe it's the paint job, I don't know. Maybe it's just an unpopular opinon.

It also makes for a better Fafnir Rann head than the plastic one imo.

The sculpting style has changed from the old metal/FW proportions and fine FW detailing to being broadly a bit larger and chunkier. This probably wouldn't be super obvious, but it's also painted in the studio method to emphasize everything very cleanly.

Its a pretty awesome modern model, but I also kinda miss the first gen heresy stuff. I think it's fine to feel both ways.

The paint job is a big part I think. The original 30k stuff was done in Forgeworlds style which felt much more military modelling inspired. Grittier, more "realistic" (as absurd a term as that is in Warhammer). Now being painted in Eavy Metal style makes it feel much more 40K and less distinct.

The details are also now a lot cleaner and crisper. Which is definitely a sign of better quality (and FWs resin feels much better than it used to) but also a bit less characterful.

It's similar to how the writing has changed from 1.0 to 2.0. It's less sci-fi historical wargaming and much closer to 40ks ott style.

That's a handsome fella, does not look tormented by the warp at all. Maybe the Space Wolves are onto something with this 'not pskyer' thing.

Anyways I can't wait until Joytoy turns him to an action figure.
