3D-Printed (mostly non-GW) Imperial Guard Armoured Company WIP

I suppose I see 3d printing as a way to bring my collection together. Currently I've a fair amount of cadian stuff old and new which is all I need for my list. I've a fair amount of steel legion which I'm planning on using as catachan but I've only a couple of lascanon and no flamers. Also I've most vehicles, they mostly need work and could maybe benefit from 3d heavy stubbers and hunter killers. Most vehicles will end up steel legion. But I've only one taurox and that's what I need for my list.  Ultimately I would like enough stuff from the classic regiments to be able to play any as any. One day it could be vostroyan instead of cadian, mordian instead of krieg and valhallan instead of catachan. So I'm just sorting what I've got really.

I love the camouflage on this tanks! It looks great and awesome on both the vehicle and the infantry.
I also get inspiration when working on my tanks from German camouflage, as well as the French  of the First World War.

I have some work done and since I got a new phone to replace my :cuss:ty tablet I can show it off.

 

The "Gunther" tanks on the previous page, which will be used as Taurox Primes, are in the process of being painted with a needlessly complicated over-engineered camo scheme:

 

 

 

One issue I had with this was that the resin these were cast in was quite brittle and as a result the antennae on this tank broke multiple times, I even lost the end of one of them, leaving them uneven. I'll probably shave them both down to the same length to make them look neater.

 

 

That's one, the second is more or less basecoated. I may do the same scheme again so they match, or maybe a variant since it'd be kind of boring doing the same again:

 

 

To paint this scheme, you have 4 colours:

Vallejo Saddle Brown, Dark Black Green, Olive Green and Orange Brown

From the saddle brown base, I painted random splotches in the other three colours, leaving gaps in between them.

You then paint dots of the three alternate colours, as dense as you think looks ok, over this.

So on any Dark Black Green surface you would paint lots of spots of Saddle Brown/Olive Green/Orange Brown etc

After that I did weathering with Agrax/Nuln Oil and some paint chips with browns and a sponge, as well as some drybrushing of mud cos lazy.

 

I'm pretty happy how it turned out.

 

Aside from that, there was recent discussion about the Steel Legion being potentially squatted, whereupon I determined to try out some of tiny legend's Blitz Legion models in my army.

I have to say, they are excellent models. Easy to assemble, loads of options. The pipes for the gas masks and the pipes for the plasma gun's ammo feed also come in a more flexible almost rubbery plastic so they are easy to bend into place if necessary and are highly unlikely to break off I'd say.

 

I have 20 so far, though I built mine with the Artel W heads that I use for most of the rest of the army:

 

 

I have had to break off some heads from older to models to finish them all.

You get a sergeant group of sergeant, medic and vox guy (3), a special weapon group of either x2 plasma or melta (2) and you can also get x5 lasgun guys either running or standing (5).

I have 20, with 2 sergeants, 2 medics, 2 vox, 2 plasma, 2 melta and the rest lasguns.

Only issue I really have is one of the poses makes the guy look like he's about to squat down to take a :cuss:, but it's not a big issue

Overall would recommend.

 

My older infantry guys were made with some of victoria's models:

 

I like these a lot too but they are extremely fiddly to assemble, especially the arms, and are quite small compared to more modern models.

 

I'll probably paint some infantry or a tank next. We'll see what I get round to.

Thanks. This mostly stemmed from me not liking the Leman Russ tank design, then looking everywhere online until I found the Carius, then this thread happened. Covid created some crazy things.

 

I've got some work done on the infantry. I have the basic colour scheme done, but they need more detailing and tiding up + basing:

 

 

Aside from the heads these are all Blitz Legion parts. It's a very versatile kit.

 

I'll post the rest of them when they're done.

Your stuff looks great, I'll be following this thread. I love how you started with the red primer as the basecoat with the vehicles, it makes the camo paint job look more authentic. Really inspiring stuff, I really should work on my Kriegers as soon as my hand heals.

Thanks Moriya. I sort of had to figure out how to do that camo pattern as I did it. Luckily it turned out well enough in the end.

Pounder, don't we all. It was originally supposed to be Jin-Roh style Scions in Tauroxs, yeas ago when I first decided to do IG. Now it's gone off on it's own direction entirely.

 

So, these guys are more or less done. There's 9 of them, cos the melta guys have no head atm.

 

 

I tried to save time by doing the black highlights with drybrushing, with very hit and miss results. The Sarge could also do with some tidying up on his mask.

The heads originally had spikes on them, and you can see where I shaved them off. The camera picks up these tiny little bumps that are hardly visible at all to the eye...

 

 

I'm happy enough with them though.

I didn't even notice they were supposed to be bumps from horns. I thought it was battle damage. That plasma gun coil looks really good.

@MoriyaSchism They're really fiddly little heads, I'm surprised I can get the others looking as smooth as they do tbh.

 

I have progress on the Menaulion, which is some kind of anti-tank tank designed by Nate Feyma. It's closest to a Valdor or maybe a Macharius Vanquisher in 40k.

 

I took progress shots of the camo scheme, not because it's particularly amazing, but someone might benefit from this.

 

The idea is something like this, middle row second from right:

 

 

I don't do it particularly well, the spots come out too big and pretty uneven overall, but you can see what I'm going for.

 

Basecoat of Tamiya Dark Yellow.

 

 

Random splotches of Vallejo German Grey.

 

 

Followed by the same with Saddle Brown.

 

 

Then do spots of alternating colours, similar to the Taurox.

 

 

After which I did some Nuln Oil to bring out details and painted in some of the other colours, like the tracks. I drybrushed the tank with a very dry brush that hit only the edges of panels and such, this brings out some of the definition.

 

 

It could do with a little more work like mud but it's basically done.

 

I still have a bunch more tanks. I'm holding off on the 2nd Tank Commander as I'm waiting for some parts to arrive for him. Might do a Basilisk next.
