Lysimachus
Ok, got a bit of progress to show for my Knives vow, a AoD KT of one of my DIY Chapters, the Marines Adamant. Terminator Sgt (Captain) Intercessor Sgt Intercessor Assault Intercessor Gunner Grenadier Heavy (Bolter) Intercessor The Chapter are Iron Hands Successors but recruit from a Feral World, hence the choice of bits. The Captain's rules for additional survivability are counts-as for the TDA Sgt, which felt right for IH. One more mini to arrive and build, as I want to be able to swap out different Operatives, but progress is good and I should be undercoated and ready to start painting by March 1st! Lysimachus
Well, a couple more minis ready for paint: Another standard Intercessor: This is to give me the option to switch out some of the Operatives for a shooty or a fighty team. If I can get a body I might build one more Assault Intercessor too. And a counts-as Eliminator: I don't hate Phobos stuff, but for this team I wanted to give them more of a classic feel, so I converted a Telion-style veteran Bolt Sniper. Anyway, unless I can find the body for the last Assault Intercessor, I'm about there for build work. I've got a can of undercoat in the right base green so I'm basically hoping for one nice day in February so I can spray ready for March 1st! Lysimachus
One more mini built for the team! I found I had a BT body that I'd bought for another project but never finished, so it got stripped and some new arms added. It's another Assault Intercessor, which gives me a 10 man squad and there should be enough options now to have a full shooty or a full choppy team! Lysimachus
Disaster. With barely a week to go before we start, I thought I wasn't going to get a clear enough day to prime. But today it was 15 degrees C and not raining all day, so I thought I was going to be ok... did a test spray, all fine... I think everyone knows what is coming next... I have been painting stuff for 20+ years, primed at much lower temps without a problem, used sprays from the same company (and even the same colour - Army Painter Angel Green) without any issues... ...but the God awful mess this can has made of my whole squad is simply unbelievable. Clumpy, detail destroying, rough on flat plates - it looks like a two year old has painted them with a decorator's paintbrush! I have brought them back in to try and get the damn stuff off again, but it's currently sticking like glue! No idea if I will be able to get it off without destroying the extensive GS work and/or the 3d printed bits (what does isopropyl do to resin?) As such, I have no idea if I will be able to complete my own Challenge. Absolutely gutted. Maybe, maybe, if I get very lucky, the horrible gunk will come off and I can use my paint-on primer (I am never touching flaming Army Painter ever again!) and get back on track. Who knows. TheArtilleryman
Dude this is such a shame. Your guys look amazing with all the unique detailing you’ve done. How weird that the paint did that… never had anything like that happen before. Really hope you manage to get them sorted. Lysimachus
Thank you, and to everyone else for the reactions too! They are currently resting in a bath of 99% IPA. Hopefully that might get the paint off, though I've no idea how the GS or the 3d resin will react to it. I'm fairly sure it won't hurt the plastic any, so there is that. The basing has all come off, but that was just gravelly stuff stuck with PVA, so not a massive problem. Whatever happens, I'm guessing it will put me a bit behind for painting, anyway! TheArtilleryman
I think washing resin models in alcohol is fine, because that’s one of the recommended methods for cleaning up prints when they first come off the plate. No idea what it does to green stuff though. gaurdian31 and Lysimachus 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385065-marines-adamant-aod-kill-team/#findComment-6096353 Share on other sites
Lysimachus
That's good news. I guess worst case then it might be a bit of resculpting a few pieces? I've heard IPA can degrade the superglue bond, too, so the joins of plastic to resin might need regluing? Again, fixable stuff, but the delay is irritating. Now I really wish I'd just stuck with my paint-on Vallejo black primer (it's great stuff!) but idiot that I am I thought I'd save myself some time on the Challenge by getting the base green done with the undercoat! Oh well, I've calmed down since yesterday, at least. I'll leave it to soak for a day or two, then I'll see where I am. Watch this space! Mandragola
I hope you were able to get the paint off. That's a nightmare. Recently I've switched to colour forge sprays wherever possible and I've had very good results so far. I've never felt that confident with the quality from army painter. One thing I would recommend, if your models are rescuable, is to consider basing your captain, eliminator and heavy bolter guy on 40mm bases. Kill team specifies the base sizes for models on the datasheet and they are not strictly legal on 32s. Obviously this doesn't matter much if you're just playing with your friends but personally I wouldn't choose to cause any potential issues over this in future, so I thought I'd warn you. Good luck getting the paint off. Lysimachus
Thanks, it looks like it is getting there slowly. As I suspected, all the GS has fallen off, but mostly in one piece so I should be able to glue bits back on. Likewise, the superglue bond has failed in a few places but I can reglue! So, I am hopeful, though I definitely won't start painting tomorrow! And thanks re the bases, the Terminator is on a 40mm, so I'm glad to learn that the standard AoD Captain is supposed to be on that size (I had somehow missed it!) I'm not sure how many more I have spare, so the other two might not have the option of a 40, but I can't see that I will play anywhere where it becomes an issue. Lysimachus
Ok, progress report. They've come out of the IPA, the plastic seems to have been stained green, but I think (hope!) that the detail has been saved enough that I can move forward! So, I've repaired the bits that came apart during scrubbing, and redone the basing materials. The PVA should dry overnight, which means by this weekend I should be able to try re-undercoating (with brush on primer!), see how it looks, and with any luck I'll be back on track and only a week behind!
