Oh damn that's a perfect Ancient as far as I am concerned. I do like the shield banner option but I'm going straight for the Ork skull to stand behind Helbrecht and taunt my mate's Orks.

I'm hoping he has the normal Ancient rules of being able to join a unit a captain or LT are already in.

He's going straight on the get on release list. And thank god my Templars are fully painted already. One new character into the WiP pile isn't too bad.

Love the banner, but is it just me or have they just used the Emperor's Champion's body with new arms and a tabard?

Seeing this I would actually quite like to put the Emperor's Champion's arms on this model. Also like the coif on the helment on the codex cover art, shame that's not a head option.

Emperor's Champion has a tabbard that goes under his boob plate, so not quite.  I do agree it's got a good pose that's useful for other kit-bashes.  I also enjoy the crusader-y helm on the front of the book.

Huh isn't that ancient (partially) a repose of the Marshall the BT got earlier? Lot's of similar elements.

Not even close.  Completely different legs, a different type of tabard, extremely different shoulders.

The shoulder is possibly the only part thats similiar with the marshal. It has the old swordbrethren extra pauldron armoring.

The body of the ancient is very much in line with the sword brethren Kit. You can pretty much add a cape and remove the banner and he'll fit right in. In thinking of getting 3 of this guy, one to build two to just use as bits sources.

Aye, him. Iirc the only things that didn't come true were CSM Bikers and a BT Ancient, which were notable just because everything else had been accurate.

At the time I think it was chalked upto them mistaking a slightly kitbashed Vanilla Ancient for a new model, but maybe it was this one afterall?

Yep.

To look back:

The model is pretty great. The Codex cover, however, is quite dreadful. Surprisingly, it's even worse that the last one. The helmet looks off, the proportions and perspective are all over the place, the left shoulder pad of the 'main marine' is ridiculous and the Chaplain has a shovel (?).

Luckily enough, the models are solid and that what matters.

When you see this guy you leave your wife & kids behind, visit the local half-Eldar hairstylist for a snazzy tonsure in order to join him in his grand crusade across the stars while frothing "EMP VULT!" incessantly.

Got mixed up with the sword brethern as there's a lot of stuff that is 1 on 1 from them; sword, greaves etc.

Though the shoulderpad has the same weird rectangle'ish shape as the mashall, which is why I went there first.

I think the Chaplain has the thinnest crozius arcanum ever forged in the Imperium. Also usable as toothpick.

Sadly, I have to agree, this cover is not so hot.

The lack of a visible backpack - while it might be "correct" for it to be completely hidden by the pose - makes it look a little weird as well.

It's like the artist had a pose in mind, discovered during the process that due to their huge pauldrons Space Marines don't look too hot with their arms up-and-open like that... and then just did it anyway.

That cover is kinda weird. What im mostly confused about is color choice. Red trim and white shoulder? Thats not what an emperors champion have? And red cross on the tabard also stands out. Maybe we were supposed to get another unit and they backed out?

Also the cover is dreadful. Weird proportions and not very inspiring

Yeah, I think they needed another take on the cover, or reuse one of the other fantastic pieces of BT art.

That's a good model though, even with only a single release, BT still came out good.

I was okay with most of the cover on a cursory glance, but you know how in 40k they describe looking at chaotic runes has a physical, palpable feeling of wrongness followed by dizziness and nausea? That pudding-bowl haircut gave me that very visceral reaction.

It's a throw back to the pauldron addon that some of the OG swordbrethren rocked:

You can clearly see that there's a regular pauldron underneath. Nice to have it still in use.

His helmet looks like a bucket with cat eyes drawn on it.

Edit: The detailing on both skulls seems really soft when compared to some of the skulls from Age of Sigmar kits and other sets. Bit of a nitpick on my end, but it's really strange to me.
