I always took it that he was so badly mangled by his murderers that his hand was the only recognizable thing that could be recovered.

In the Index Astartes article, right before telling his final story comes this paragraph:

"Rogal Dorn outlived many of his brother Primarchs and each loss saddened him greatly. Also, as fewer Primarchs remained, each began to attract unhealthy respect. With the Emperor on Terra, some distant systems began to deify the Primarchs they encountered. To Dorn, only the Emperor was worthy of this attention and he feared the consequences. However, sacrifice came easily to Dorn..."

It seems to me like pretty good setup for why Dorn would fake his death.

As for his hand, I think it would be better for him to have just hacked one of his own off then for him to have (first kept then) left one of Alpharius'.

The Scouring series will be as long as sales/success dictate. GW beancounters will determine whether it is profitable or not. The more profitable the more books we will get. No way this has been more than loosely mapped out. It will be “let’s see how this goes”.

For me, I am reverting back to waiting for MMPB like I did with the entire HH having committed to Std HB for SoT believing it was only 8 books!

Will also try to ONLY buy those that review well and cover things I am really interested in having been burned by DoF series. I need to fight my “collector instincts”!

No, they had his full body in Space Marine. Most of his skeleton was encased in amber but his hand was separate and Chapter Masters were allowed to minutely inscribe their names on his hand-bones.

Then came the retcon that they only had his hand and the rest of his body was never found. This potentially opened the door for his return in some fashion.

Then came the revelation in Praetorian of Dorn that Dorn cut of Alpharius's hands before killing him. This means he has been potentially carrying around a spare Primarch hand ever since. We know from Angels of Caliban that despite their differences in appearance, the Primarchs are so genetically similar that Kurze was able to use his generprint to launch and orbital drop of Dark Angels that had been keyed to the Lion's DNA.

My personal head-canon is that Dorn decided to disappear for some reason (maybe going undercover, maybe going off on some secret mission for the Emperor). He waited for a suitable opportunity and then launched an apparently suicidal attack. In the confusion he drops Alpharius's hand somewhere he knows his sons will find it and leap to the obvious conclusion. He then slips away in the confusion and vanishes.

Wouldn't the hand have rotted to bone by then?

While I love the irony of numerous IF Chapters Masters (and rank & file) venerating the remains of one of their greatest enemies, I still think he will be sporting a bionic if when he reappears.

Funnier than Rogal Dorn returning with a Bionic Hand is him having that Bionic and the IF's Venerated Hand also isn't his.

In a setting where you have stasis firlds that literally stop the flow of time? Unlikely

People also forget that Primarchs have an insane regeneration and healing factor. Losing a hand is a minor inconvenience to them.

Encased in amber?! Like a prehistoric insect? How did this happen?

"The Fists' holiest relic: the mighty skeleton, embedded in clear amber contoured to body-form, of the Primarch himself."  It's described as 'mock-flesh', so it's essentially coating the  bones with amber in place of muscle, skin, etc.  I imagine it looks like Glob Herman from the X-Men.

I think I will do the same to save money. I only really committed to hardbacks for the last few entries of the Siege (including all of TEATD), but that was still lots of money lol.

Welcome... to Primarch Park.

Do de do de doooh

Fabius Bile has entered the chat

On a more serious note, here's hoping that TPTB are not going walk the limited edition road again.
