I was on the hunt for eggs this morning at Tesco when a copy of White Dwarf caught my eye. I haven’t bought one of them since I was about 15 (a while ago) and then my eyes fell upon Combat Patrol. Now I’m not entirely sure how good these are usually but I just snagged 2 Deafkoptas (minus bases) for £10 so I think I’m going to keep my eye out for them, at least the next few which seem Orky.

As Orks for an important part of my Luna Wolves’ company’s history it is appropriate that I have a little detachment of Orks to squash.

I replaced the front wing bits to

male them a bit bigger and give space for this laser looking weapon (it’s from the genestealer cult quadbike) and I hooked up a weird looking gantry for a machine gun using a bent bit of sprue for the other. Turns out I can’t just build models, I have to convert something somewhere.

anyway this is my offering and if anyone has any good advice on the magazine please let me know!

Thanks! They were quite fun to build. I did make a vow since then that I’m just going to build and paint instead of mess around with every model that crosses my path - at least on the combat patrol front.

I have since managed to get all of the Votann combat patrol issues, which came out to £80 for what I think is around £180 ish. I haven’t a sausage if it’s a decent set of models in terms of gaming. I was outraged to find that the Khal retails for £28 right now for a mono-pose model that’s 40% base. Still, they were pretty fun to build and I think Combat Patrol will be my guilty pleasure for when I can’t be bothered to convert my marines

The magazines are often very good value (relative to buying the models separately), so it looks like you did very well indeed.

The prices on some of the character models can be quite painful these days.

Got the first of the Jetbike things done. I’ve got no idea about their lore or anything like that so there’s no symbols really.

I’ll be honest, not a fan of the infantry models at all. The Jetbike thing might look better if the floaty wheels were converted to regular wheels but this is my no chopping blog.

I am not a fan of the Votann models (the design does not speak to me), but I really like the color choice and the weathering on that jetbike.

I don't know, somehow I get a certain "Fallout" style vibe from it.

I got big fallout vibes when I sat down with it. It’s one of the reasons I went for a bright ‘army’ colour. Hopefully the scheme works well on the less armoured things.

The weathering is nicely done - it feels sympathetic to the model.

Thank you pretty chuffed with it tbh

Im keeping a fairly limited palette with these guys, mainly green and orange shades - I’m counting the pale green/brown in that - to see if I can make them look decent with that limitation.

I think Votann’s MO is exploring and mining for resources/tech so I’m going to try and shoot for a weathered look rather than a damaged look - scratched paint on the edges from wind on the bikes and touch points etc.

Also the orange I used for the base is meant to be an airbrush paint from GW but it covers terribly so it’s reduced to basing.

Unless that big wheeled truck thing comes out in the mag I won’t be touching these again tbh.

Just a baby update here. Got one of the pioneers? painted up. He’s pre-weathering powder - that’s going to happen in one go I think so I don’t have to worry too much about ruining my desk 15 times and I can varnish them in one sitting too. He is a bit brighter in real life - this was an 11pm kitchen light photo rather than the daylight lamp I used for the bike

I’m pondering making a little board with this weird orangey basing and keeping all of the Combat Patrols I pick up with this same basing style. I have GSC on the sprues ready for building and thematically a bit of industrial bits and bobs with a more deserty - or whatever the hell you describe this orange as - background might tie into their faction theme
