I Blame the Dark Gods... - Painting Yellow Chaos Marines "Solar Giants"

Afternoon (or morning, or night, whatever suits you) everyone,

 

I am a long, long tim lurker here. I have been really struggling to do anything, anything at all, to do with the hobby for so long it's actively painful. I was failing to paint anything the other day, staring at a small five man squad of chaos marines. I didn't really want to paint any of the existing colour schemes. And my painting skills are basic. But... I just decided to have a play around with the paints. 

 

I remembered the old Warhammer Fantasy colour scheme for Mousillon, yellow and black, and decided to have a go at making it work on Chaos Marines. The results are just below. I am not any better at photography than I am at painting, so the images are a bit poor, but I just wanted to share.

 

At the moment they are tentatively going under the name of "Solar Giants" and need a warband symbol. I am planning for them to be a result of the Age of Apostasy - a marine crusade or chapter who made the mistake of backing Vandire's side. Rather than admit they had gotten it wrong, they fled from the aftermath, enting up greedy and embittered. Now they act as pirates and mercenaries, but try to drag people into their visions of the 'New Imperium', their broken vision of what could have been or still could be, if they are finally, finally vindicated. If they were right. I wanted to play around with the sorts of ideas presented by the Flesheater Courts from Age of Sigmar, people so broken that they hallucinate their own noble purpose, while being the worst sorts of monsters - and then spreading their delusions as wide as possible like a contagion.

 

Anyway, I am just starting a topic to share them in the hope that it will motivate me to actually keep painting. 

Any comments are welcome, as well as suggestions for the warband symbol! Something simple would be great, since my skills at freehand are pretty feeble. All the best to everyone :)

As a FEC collector and fan, I highly approve of this take. Depending on how you want to take this, this could be a great theme for a Tzeentch warband IMO. Not really focused around sorcery like the Thousands Sons, but aspects such as illusion and lies. It could also work for Undivided too, as the "contagion" of madness would be a great Nurgle/Tzeentch mix.

 

The pics are a bit hard to see (Id recommend a lightbox, you can get small ones on Amazon for pretty cheap), but I don't see any issues with your painting. Yellow is a hard color to get right, and it looks like you did a fine job.

 

Symbols are difficult, depends on if you want to freehand or try and get some decals. I think a simple sun symbol would be an easy choice. Maybe a sun symbol free hand with some chaos star decal over that?

I think your background is spot on - it fits the setting very well.

 

I agree that some kind of stylised sun would make a good icon, or something more generic/abstract like a lightning slash (a la Storm Giants).

 

If you're looking for a lightbox, you can make one really easily.

Rogue Panda, welcome to Chaos. Your first batch of 5 Legionaries look excellent! I'm excited to watch your project develop. Especially since I too have a nascent yellow and black Chaos warband, the Warpborn.

 

I agree a sun motif would work well. I also agree that red would look nice. For what it's worth, I've gone with a red crescent moon motif on the Warpborn's symbol. Here are some photos.

They look good to me? On the question of a symbol, since they are the Solar Giants, why not use the imperial fist logo. You can use the transfer sheet, and use it as a guide to recolor the fist. Then just add some simple arrows around the circle and you have a chaos sigil.

Thank you for the suggestions and ideas everyone, I really appreciate it! I will have a look at a light box. Trying to get the concentration to finish another little 5 man squad, decide on a symbol, and then maybe a character or a unit of chaos spawn. I'll try to post some more as soon as I can get them done. Tallarn Commander, I like those minis! Very creative!

Slick. Seems reasonably Tzeentchian to me... So for a symbol I'd suggest something that's like a tzeentch symbol that just emphasizes the circle? Or may just make it a 9-pointed star... If you can draw a 5-pointed star you can learn to draw a 9-pointed one consistently, it'll just take some practice (not to say obsession and delusion).

I kind of like the idea that the 'tails' in this case are clouds around the eye of a giant (which is also possibly a sun).
