Crunching the numbers on the individual prices...

Legiones is RRP £166.50.

Mechanicum RRP is £158.25

Solar Auxilia RRP is £150.50

If they're £100 like Combat Patrol/Spearhead that's great, but they seem to be a bit pricier content-wise than those, so I would guess maybe £110-£125?

This felt like a real gap in the range, particularly for the SA. Assuming they're ~£100 they'll be very, very good.

Can anyone run the numbers on average Combat Patrol discounts against these... I'm supposed to be revising.

If they get priced the same as Combat Patrols (£100) they'd be 40% off for the Astartes, 36.8% off for the Mechanicum and 33.6% off for the Auxilia, which IMO is probably slightly wishful thinking, given the range of discount on Combat Patrols is more like 28-33% (obviously some are better than others and there are some outside this range, but 40% would be a real outlier for a Combat Patrol or Spearhead.)

Feels like £110 seems more likely, would put the discounts at 33.9%, 30.5% and 26.9% respectively which is more like what the 40K and AoS boxes offer.

These are some nice looking boxes, if they're range items and not just a limited run I could definitely see myself picking up one or two in the future. The Astartes box coming with a Rhino for the troops is a big plus and  I adore the leviathan kit so that one especially is a big winner for me. They seem like a great way to bulk out an existing force, I'm a big fan or MK.VI armour but it would be really nice to see similar boxes with the other marks.

Seeing this I am thinking my XIXth and XIVth Legions need some SA allies to go along with the Sisters of Silence (for XIXth) and Knights (XIVth)

Yeah, more than anything they scream Allied Detachment to me.

Interesting, particularly if they remain as a regular range item, even if not the exact same, you could work your way through SM armour marks for example but would need to redo the packaging so maybe not particularly cost efficient.

I've not yet purchased any new scale infantry as the Age of Darkness box was too many MkVI for my tastes but a smaller amount I could be tempted by whilst I wait for MkIV to appear.

And Rhinos are always handy.

All depends on the price. But otherwise I quite like the mix of models in each set.

I agree. The Solar Auxilia ones looks quite nice. In the other hand, I don't personally like the Astartes box. This edition is very focused in shooting but in my personal case I have plenty of heavy weapons, and a Leviathan full shooting it's not my favourite combination

Im not a Heresy fan, but I wish 40k had combat patrols like these. Each box has plenty of baseline troops, a centerpiece, and something extra. Imagine an Cult Mechanicus box with 6 Kataphrons, 5 electro priests, and a Kastelan. That comes pretty close in price to that Mechanicum box

I always saw the 40k ones as 'start here' but some are just bad for that since they either have a mess of units with no synergy (looking at you IG) or the same unit doubled (looking at you BA).

Depending on price I really like these, especially the Solar Auxilia one. My only gripe is with the marine one. Why have 20 marines and 1 rhino....? I would have preferred to either lost the dread and have 20 marines and 2 rhinos or lose 10 marines and have 10 marines, a rhino, a dread and then something else - maybe rapiers or something similar.

Heresy Tactical boxes come with 20 dudes, plus I think the idea is that having a 'varied' box makes it more interesting to Lil Timmy than two identical Rhinos would. Technically you can make x10 Heavy Support models and have enough left for another squad or a 10-man Tactical Squad.

That and people just really like Dreadnoughts.

Price is going to be key here, but these are something that has been missing from the range so it's great to see. I wish the Marines one was Mark 2 or 3 rather than 6 but I get that they've probably got loads of those still around after the 2nd Edition box went off sale. Not sure I need another Thanatar, but I do like the Mechanicum box. The Auxilia one is absolutely perfect though. Everything in there is ideal whether you're starting them as an army or if you're expanding an existing one. Will definitely be picking one of those up.

This isn't about providing a discount on something you need, its about moving inventory. The 2.0 box sold like crazy, so nobody is buying the separate mk6 boxes, especially with MK2 released. Rhinos are another thing that didn't move much, considering they were easy to pop and only carried 10 models. The leviathan is an interesting choice, but a powerful entry as an ally for sure. I think ad mech is the best value for someone just getting started or building a new army. Could easily snag two of those and then a magos to make a solid beginner army. Solar is weakest due to leman russ getting nerfed and needing a lot more infantry. Seems like they would have been better with two cohorts, command, and a leman russ (or ogryns). But again, its about moving models.

They were back when they were Start Collecting. Unfortunately now the Combat patrol is such a weird catchall amalgamation of things, it's hard to know what they want.

These are a great idea, especially if they’re a permanent addition to the range. As others have said, this something that’s been missing from Heresy and as such is a welcome option. I wish the marines one was something other than mk6 but like twopounder say, I suspect they want to shift inventory of the mk6 stuff.

Hasn't the "GW use old stock for bundle boxes" theory been fairly thoroughly debunked at this stage? Also, with the SA - Ogryn's aren't available at present and certainly not in plastic, so the range is basically Cohorts, Veletarii, the Command Section, the Sentinels and the tanks. Most of the tanks are probably too big for this, at least anything using the Malcador would be... so I don't know what you'd expect in this? Personally I think it's solid.

Also, if memory serves the Mk II Rhino was out of stock for about 6 months after release and are presently out of stock in both the UK and US so... hardly "didn't move much."
