I’ll get him to add to his buddy Messinius and Centos and the rest of the gang, it’s interesting while his armour trims do look more gold than copper ( orange) I’m wondering if the same is applicable to him as to the issue of the sword brethren having gold trims ( when multiple companies working together or seconded they take the colour of the leading or larger force, I think it was either mentioned in 8th ed Ultramarines codex or 9th space marine codex) ( mind you I paint all mine with gold trims, only caption heraldry on pad and sometimes cloaks different )

anycase I ramble, do we have an educated guess on release date of the book and plastic

There was a vacancy and they didn’t want to do a reshuffle? :p

There WASN'T a vacancy. The story killing off Epathus was clearly written right around the same time as Solemnity and the entire point of killing Epathus within that story was to give Areios a void to fill. From a real-world perspective, promoting Areios wasn't the solution to an existing problem.

It's not like this was any kind of long-term plan. In Areios' most recent appearance, he'd been promoted to Captain in the Unnumbered Sons. But that wasn't high-profile enough. So in order to get him into the Ultramarines as a Trojan horse who could be fast-tracked to captain in the poster boy faction, they had to pretend that never happened and he was still a lieutenant.

Yes, instead of going from Lieutenant to Captain within the first five years of the Indomitus Crusade, he had now gone from Lieutenant to... Lieutenant in twice that time. But they still made a point of telling us how amazing he was before they shipped him off to the Ultramarines.

I always just assumed that he got demoted from Captain after the events of Throne of Light, after he essentially had the :cuss: beaten out of him by a Dark Apostle and was left to die.

There is no mention of a demotion, only the "greatness" that Guilliman sees in him, to the point that he personally requested Areios' assignment to the Ultramarines.

I’m confused. Epathus being dead sounds like a vacancy to me.

If your point is “they did that deliberately to give Areios a spot to fill” - I agree with you. I was saddened by the death of another longstanding company captain, but I don’t really see what the in-universe issue is beyond that? Surely if a company captain is  dead, his lieutenant replacing him doesn’t seem far-fetched?

or is it the lieutenant-> captain -> lieutenant thing you’re struggling with?

now that Captain Titus is canon(which completely stuffs up the previous canon of the second company captaincy by the way) , it would seem that slotting a former captain into a lieutenant’s position is one way to get around the issue of too many command rankers, especially if joining/re-joining the chapter.  It is at worst slightly awkward from an in-universe perspective.

From an IRL perspective I’ve no issue with it. More ultramarines characters, pls! Hell, I’d take all ten company captains and the entirety of chapter command if I could!

Burst out laughing at this. The absolute state of 40K rules.

The writing was on the wall during 6th/7th when Deathwatch got their codex and random unit entries/options not being allowed, which got missed due to the fact the Kill Team entry itself was super malleable.
