Whether it was always the plan to treat the PDFs like this - or whether the rules writers were given some more latitude after the reaction to the initial Libers - the Heresy team is doing great stuff with these releases. A simplified, but still varied set of rules? With some minor new additions? We love to see it.

I like this, at first glance. More simple and easier to use in game, maybe less "historical" but in the end, this new set looks like much less messy than in 2.0.

Again, the free pdf stuff has more quality than the paid material.

Looks pretty fun at first look, not as complicated as last edition. Emperor's Children always hitting on 4+ in combat looks very strong.

I'm doing Contemptor Dreads and Shattered Legions Emperor's Children might be what I'm looking for, because of this.

Contemptors in melee are great: tough, quite fast, their Gravis Fists punch through even Terminators like nothing...IF they could touch them.  They only have Weapon Skills of 4.  So you face fancy Legion-specific Termies, they're usually veteran-level with WS 5, it's like what Ali said made him retire, "I can see the punch, but I just can't get there."  I think this definitely helps (more than, say, World Eaters throwing another punch).

And it's not just Contemptors against fancy schmancy Termies, it's all those Veteran melee types.

But now I have to consider what to put them with.  So I really welcome this discussion.

Gives me a lot of hope for the Zone Mortalis PDF and the Custodes book we are due.

Also, the Journals have had decent rules in them. Obviously much smaller.

Space Wolves and Word Bearers to get into combat more reliably. Ultramarines to cripple return fire and overwatch. Raven Guard for a nice little toughness boost at range. Finally SoH looks very good for Dreads and I think it "stacks" with ECs since that one doesn't say "unmodified hit rolls"

Oh let me look at SoH again, but is my take on EC Dreads actually correct?  It made sense to me because it's like the Dreadnought software doesn't quite match up to their hardware, so this is a the Shattered Legions EC thing is a bit of a hack, but I don't know if I'm right.

Edit - Brother!  I think you're right, the SoH "stacks" with EC's it looks like omg we're choosing 2 Chapter Tactics like previous editions again.

I say this because after watching some games, Contemptors' bottleneck isn't speed across the table or even survivability, it's making the Attacks count against things like named characters and wotnot.

I don't know what you would be wrong about.

Keep in Mind that you can select up to three traits, so you can still add another one to SoH/EC. Wolves or WBs would probably be best but DG might help sometimes and would make for a very thematic Isstvaan III Force

I’m very pleased to see these rules. I’m thinking of a new army for Heresy, mostly made from Saturnine, as a very late heresy traitor force. At the Siege when all order has collapsed and people are just running around smashing stuff. I’d probably have some daemons and/or militia allies.

I didn’t like the previous shattered legion rules at all. These are a little bit too “safe”, if anything. But they do let me represent the madness of the situation so that suits me well.

I’m not sure which legions to go with yet. One option would be to have shattered legion stuff as the majority of the force with a small contingent of sons of Horus allies, representing people who still had things under control.

I’m not sure if it would work better to make this army as shattered legion or possibly Word Bearers with various allied factions. I’d like to use quite a few WB legion units as it happens, so running them as Rimary might work best, perhaps with shattered legion allies. I’ll put some lists together and have a think, as there are various ways to represent basically the same thing.
