hd3
So I quickly finished the bolt rifle and attached the head from Grotsmasha. This is originally from the legion praetor with axe in 30k but the hair and ponytail really doesn't suit a son of Alpharius. However it works great for a knight of Caliban. I'm getting a custom forest theme resin base sent for this guy but it won't arrive for quite a while so I'm putting him on hold for now. hd3
So I'm adding a photo of my in progress Rubric Marine here since he will be representing the fifteenth legion. As well as the plague marine for the fourteenth . Solution hd3 Posted November 2 Author Solution Share Posted November 2 (edited) Here's the plague marine who represents the death guard in my assembly. And the stage which will one day host all the founding legions circa M.41 Edited November 2 by hd3 Tallarn Commander, Dr_Ruminahui, Grotsmasha and 4 others 6 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387045-the-crusader-host-20-and-a-tyranid/page/3/#findComment-6139835 Share on other sites
hd3
So because of bad weather making it difficult to prime models outside, I've started on my Blood Angel as it is literally the only model I have assembled AND primed. I wanted to make sure this contrasted with the deeper red of the word bearers and world eaters, so I went with Tamiya fine white primer to make it pop out a bit more. Then mephiston red for the base coat followed by agrax wash in the recessed details. Then my usual black legion over the armour seals and ribbing which I will wash with nuln oil next time. I wanted the caputmori/aquilla on the chest to stand out so I used black templar for a brighter look. Rhinox hide over the leather features. I also used blue on the right knee to reflect the blood angels unique way of marking their squad numbers. Finally Leadbelcher over the metallics. Next it's going to be corvus black for the gun casing. For the base, I'm thinking I'll do a desert style base to reflect Baal. Firedrake Cordova
Looks like you're off to a good start - it's a strong, vibrant red. I suppose the other way to get a contrast to the Word Bearers would have been to use the 2nd Ed colour scheme, which was a bit more orange. Winter sucks for priming, unless you're brush priming (which is time-consuming) or have an airbrush (which has its' own drawbacks) hd3 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387045-the-crusader-host-20-and-a-tyranid/page/3/#findComment-6141656 Share on other sites
hd3
I did my usual leather belt, pill box formulas here, rhinox, agrax, gorthor then Leadbelcher and castellan green for the pillbox. I then did an edge highlights if evil sunz scarlet over all the armour trim. I think it may not be right enough to contrast with the base bright red though. Maybe another highlight on top of orange? Or an even brighter red somehow? Does anyone know how blood angels contrast looks over evil sunz? For the aquilla I used eshin grey and administratum grey over the wings for highlights and then reikland fleshshade over the retributor armor for the skull. I did the same for the assault magazine bolt rifle except for the gun casing I used corvus black. Actually I think I should've used this for the leather too in retrospect but too late now. Next for the base I'm going to use desert tones to make it resemble the sands of Baal. It's hard to see that there's a highlight on the red, although that could simply be an issue with the image (cameras struggle to capture some reds properly, in my experience) If it's any help, GW use Wild Rider Red and Fire Dragon Bright for highlighting in their videos. Fire dragon bright is the orange one right? Might try that then Assembled and added the head, courtesy of Grotsmasha. The model base is Vallejo English uniform with an agrax wash. Firedrake Cordova
Yup, Fire Dragon Bright is pretty orange. It's interesting using English Uniform as the base for skin - I would have assumed it was more of a khaki colour and wouldn't have worked. Brother Christopher
That's a very clean paintjob on the Blood Angel. The face is great (and seems easy to paint, too!) and the colour for the base works well, too. My only observation/criticism at this point concerns the edges on the leather pouches but I assume that's due to the model being in the WIP stage. hd3
Yeah, I need to go back with the rhinox hide and clean up the leather pouches a little. hd3
I've started my Night Lord now. I wanted a model that was distinct from a regular chaos legionary so I used a Nemesis Claw heavy gunner with the unique night lord helmet to help differentiate him. I also wanted to use a sector imperialis base so he could be standing on top of an aquilla. I'm also pleased with how I was able to get his foot to match the raised out of place slab of ferrocrete. He's been primed with pro acryll neutral grey followed by retributor armor for the trim and kantor blue for the base armour. phandaal, Tallarn Commander, Grotsmasha and 3 others 6 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387045-the-crusader-host-20-and-a-tyranid/page/3/#findComment-6143620 Share on other sites
Brother Christopher
Good progress and a fun way of keeping things fun. I like the BA but I think I'll like the heretic model even more. Are you planning to paint the lightning on the armour, too? 14 hours ago, hd3 said: I'm also pleased with how I was able to get his foot to match the raised out of place slab of ferrocrete. This is a great feeling, isn't it? A thing that no one really notices but you know you got it right. It's really cool that something as small as this can bring a lot of satisfaction. Anyway, made some slight progress, rhinox hide on the leather, khorne red for the tabard, Leadbelcher on all the silver next I'm thinking an all over nuln oil and then re-establish the colours. hd3
My night lord nemesis claw heavy gunner is almost finished except for decals and a little clean up. I used nuln oil over everything and then a highlight of liberator gold for the trim. Then refined it by putting more unwashed kantor blue in the middle of the panels. For the bat wings on the helmet, I used carroburg crimson with an edge highlights of evil sunz. Finally an edge highlights of thousand sons blue on the armour edges without gold trim. The lightning was a really fun bit of free hand to try. I used Ahriman blue first for a bright light blue and then white scar inside that. I think if I did this again, I'd use a size 0 brush for the blue and 000 for the white scar to make it easier to retrace the lightning bolts without covering up the blue. I may redo the eye lenses in aethernatic blue over white scar though. Red lenses just blends in too much with the rest of the helmet.
