hd3
Varnished my Dark Angel at last. I also wanted to show off the custom bases I got for future crusader host members. The skulls for the world eaters, the dirt and chaos octed stones for the black legion, the steampunk for the iron hands and the grave for the Raven Guard. Each one is supposed to represent the legion thematically as the prior bases have. I dunno what to do for the white scars though. I got a base with crystals and dirt texture that I was thinking of painting to look like Aiur from StarCraft but that's because I can't think how to paint 'space mongolia'. hd3
Pleased to report some progress. I have started on my Khorne Berzerker from the World Eaters. I swapped out the shoulder pad for a mk2 shoulder so I could use a decal instead of the raised emblem. I started with pro acryll light grey primer, then mephiston red for the base of the armour with runelord brass trim. Then rhinox hide for the pistol holster but the leather strips tabard and the bandolier I wanted to do as black leather so I used Abaddon black. The armour seals are black legion. The chain sword and pistol are Abaddon black with duralumin from Vallejo. While the silver bits of the power pack are gunmetal by Vallejo. Then finally everything was washed with agrax and I reestablished the mephiston red in the middle of the panels. Then duralumin to pick out the rivets. The skulls are all zandri dust, agrax earthshade and a dry brush of ushabti bone. Really love the khorne base I got. I need to find a way to make the skulls look like they've been hit with blood spatter though. I thought maybe soaking a brush with blood angels red and hitting it with another brush to make droplets fly off? hd3
I've highlighted now with duralumin, evil sunz scarlet. As well as corvus black then mechanicus standard grey highlights, admin grey on the black leather and girthor brown for the browns. For the base I did another drybrush if ushabti bone and then irinarch skin. I tried a new technique for the blood splatter, soaking a toothbrush with blood angels red thinned down with lahmian medium which I then pulled back and flicked forward to get a natural splatter of droplets on the skull. Then finally I used an old world eaters decal for the legion badge. hd3
I've started on my Space Wolf. The Vylka Fenryka's representative is a bloodclaw in a deliberately reckless assault marine pose. I used pro acryll grey primer with a base coat of Russ grey and a recess shade of agrax then an edge highlight of fenrisian grey. The armour seals are as always black legion though I still need to add the nuln oil. I used my usual rhinox hide, agrax, girthor highlight. The pistol is iron warriors with nuln and corvus black for the gun casing and chain sword. The chest Aquilla is retributor armor with agrax while the skull is the same as the fenrisian tokens. For the bone totems I used zandri, agrax, and a touch of ushabti. I wanted the fenrisian tokens to look different though so I used pallid wych flesh, space wolves contrast and an edge highlight of ulthuan grey. Finally for the shoulder pauldrons and pack markings on the knee, I'm using aver land sunset which is VERY slowly building up to a decent coverage. The bloodclaws use red and yellow for squad markings so I'm going to use mephiston red after a few more coats of averland. I'm planning to add another space wolf decals to the grey kneepad as an honour mark for this bloodclaw and maybe some runes on the chain sword. Im deliberately adding every detail I can to make this look as distinct from standard template primaris gear as possible. hd3
My bloodclaw is now mostly finished. I used admin gray for the highlight of the gun casing and chain sword and runelord brass for the extra metallic details. After that I added as many fenrisian touches as I could putting runes on the sword and kneepad and appropriate pack markings. For the base I used Vallejo neutral gray, nuln oil and a dry brush of administratum gray with a wash of castellan green for a pop of colour. Xv88 and agrax for the soil and then vallhallan blizzard for the snow to show this is a fenrisian fort! Now just micyro sol and varnish and to attach the head. I also finished my representatives for the second and eleventh legions. hd3
Ive attached the head (thanks grot) and a second coat of micro sol. Tomorrow matt varnishing and then he's done! I'm really pleased with how well I was able to fit the tactical rock into the ruins base so it looks like a continuous structure. hd3
My local club is having a painting event this Sunday so I've decided to take advantage of having all those different shades of black and start in the 'black trinity'. Starting with the Iron Hand and the Black Legionary. I wanted the Iron Hand in particular to have a metallic look, appropriately so I primed an infernus marine in pro acryll neutral grey primer then base coated iron warrior over the top. For the black legionary I wanted to include the 'sons of horus' chaos icon so everyone knows this is a veteran who served with great Lupercal himself. I primed Tamiya light grey then a spray of Tamiya bright gold before a base coat of retributor armor. Then pro acryll steel for metallic details, rhinox hide for leather, khorne red for cloth and mephiston red for the weapon casings. The skulls and bones are zandri dust while the cables and armour seals are black legion with eshin grey highlights. I think I was too thin with the black legion on the chest though and may need to redo it. Then an agrax wash all over. Looking at it now though I think I might need to redo the khorne red on the back of the tabard and maybe the gun casing needs a coat of black to dull it down a bit before the red so I might need to repaint that too. hd3
I've blocked in the black on my Black Legionary. I went with pro acryll transparent black. It came out with a really smooth matte finish I'm quite happy with. Now he just needs a little clean up and highlights and then the model itself is done. I started on my Iron Warrior too. The regular legionary wasn't 4th legion enough for me so I added a custom head and powerpack from the 'full metal brotherhood ' range from dakka dakka. I decided on a heavy bolter because I thought that was the most 'iron warrior ' load out. I wanted to try a completely different approach with this marine. I've primed in Tamiya grey then undercoated in Tamiya matt black before a zenith highlight of rhinox hide. Then it's all dry brushes. First Vallejo gunmetal, then a nuln oil wash before a drybrush of duralumin, stormhost silver and runefang steel. For the trim I used agaros dunes for a nice off gold tone and pro acryll magnesium for the heavy bolter casing. hd3
My iron hand has been given a coat of pro acryll satin black followed by pro acryll black wash and finally 4:1 contest medium over leviadon blue. I have also finished the iron hands base. I wanted a mechanical style base for the iron hand so I went with the 'steampunk' style 32 mm base from " koalamartyr" on ebay. I started with a base coat of pro acryll magnesium then picked out every individual gear with a different metallic paint before washing the whole thing with rattling grime to look suitably grimdark. I've also furthered my iron warrior with pro acryll bronze and nihiliak oxide over the chain and runelord brass for the heat transfer cable housings. I think I screwed up the width of the hazard stripes though alas. hd3
Just a quick highlight of dark reaper today and tidied up the gold trim a little. I've added gorthor brown highlights to the leather and I also added flesh tearers red over the eye icon on the leg. I started the base too. I wanted a very 'chaos' base for the poster boys for the dark side so I went with a resin base with dirt texture and sigil stones engraved with the the 8 pointed star. I started with a mournfang brown base and an agrax wash. hd3
Mostly finished the base with a dry brush of xv 88, them zandri dust. Mechanics grey for the rocks with nuln oil and a dry brush of Vallejo neutral grey. The chaotic circles are white scar with tesseract glow and I'm gonna do a small dry brush of Caliban and moot green later around them. Then stormhost silver for the chains. I used Russ grey over mechanics grey for the ribbon and Balthazar gold for the chaotic emblem for the legionary. I also highlighted the tabard with mephiston red. For the iron warrior I used mechanics grey and nuln for the severed cable while thinned gore grunts fur for the trim. I might put Abaddon black over the central panel for a bit less metallic paint on the model. Finally xv88 for the leather details, then gor grunta fur and Blood angels red for the eye lenses which I will darken with nuln a bit later.
