I couldn't find anything definitive online or in my old codicies, but if Black Templar Phobos Marines and sneaky Eliminators are a thing, it stands to reason that there would be sneaky Scouts. (Beyond those lucky guys who get tossed into Crusader Squads in the worst job shadowing assignment ever.)

Am I off base on this?

Back in ye olden days of the 4th edition codex, we basically only had the few units that were in that codex, which didn't include scout squads or scout bike squads, or the land speeder storm, so the only way to get scout models in the army was through the crusader squad.

This changed with the advent of 6th edition where we lost our codex, but got access to the main marine codex, so we pretty much were able to field all the marine toys, minus psykers.

It hasn't really been addressed since, so I do not believe there is anything preventing you from sticking your neophyte models in a scout squad.

I've gotten a lot of anger from lore focused folks who tell me I shouldn't put Scouts in a Black Templar army... but I didn't see any rules against it in the rules.

I was kinda hoping there was some novel/short story/codex blurb I could annoyingly point to and in a quasy-snarky (and very douchey) tone and say, "See! SEE! I can run Scouts as a squad and it's totally fluffy!"

Alas, not all my dreams can come true.

You do you, before we got access to the 6th edition codex, we couldn't field anything that wasn't in the the rather limited 4th ed bt codex. With 6th we got access to everything that wasn't a librarian, including devestators, etc. It's not explicitly forbidden, just stated that neophytes earn their place fighting alongside their initiate mentors.

But what's not to say the initiates don't every once in a while come together and give their neophytes a covert task they need to handle on their own?

I at least took the excuse to paint up some alternate weapons that were in the scout kill team set. They're "still neophyte" firearms if anyone asks
