The new one actually looks like a daemon trapped in the machine, and feeling torturous to boot. The new one leaves nothing to the imagination, and that's a LOT cooler/40k.

The new one looks like a Soul Grinder in a Breastplate.

Having spent some time to think, this feels like someone was trying to make a new Soul Grinder, got told the Soul Grinder was getting removed entirely and decided to just slap some random armour on it and call it a Defiler instead.

It feels like a kick in the teeth to give it TSons bits and make it yet another godawful fleshy abomination that doesn't fit the TSons vibe in the same refresh.

Well of course the Sons can't make it the way they want, they don't have a Warpsmith to do any bodywork on it ;)

I know some people in the community have an unending hatred for the way the Forgefiend looks as a Daemon Engine, but that at least actually looks like a Daemon ENGINE and not just a Daemon with armour nailed to it since its a full armoured shell with some fleshy bits poking through rather than being just a big-ass Demon in a metal Crop-top

This is off reddit, the flesh isn't remotely necessary and instead is giving "creature with amrour and amputations" energy.

I don't dislike the mini at all, it's just a big departure that imo wasn't required.

The old/current Defiler box was never sold as a dual kit with the Soul Grinder anywhere that I'm aware of. Sure, they shared parts, but they were always sold separately and statted separately so I'm not sure why we see references like that one above. A new Defiler might mean the Soul Grinder goes away, might mean we get a new one, might mean a new one that shares the lower half like the old one  -which would be kind of funny - or the old kit might stick around for a while.

In the meantime I'm just happy that a) they updated an older kit that could have just been dropped and b) it kept the same weapon options and added some new ones which means no one's battlecrab is invalidated rules-wise. It's a good outcome in general, barring fleshy-bits arguments.

I'm not really seeing Soul Grinder here. The Soul Grinder was a Daemon fused with metal. This is just an old kit that has been brought in line with the aesthetics GW has pushed for CSM for the last 15ish years

For me, as someone who loved the old Defiler, this would have been a runaway success. The fleshy version is still cool as a model, but I'm having trouble convincing myself it's a Defiler.

It is good it has lots of weapon and head options. Certainly allows for more variety than the dinobots. Fits in with the Venomcrawler, Mutilators/Obliterators and Lord Discordant very well too.

To me this doesn't say Defiler though. I feel like its a bigger, more badass Venomcrawler.

For me personally it's too fleshy and too busy (though the latter could be photos or paint).

Baseless speculation: If Vashtorr gets a line of mechanical daemons (like it's been speculated by some), I could see the Soul Grinder filling the role of his greater daemon. That would warrant a unique kit in my mind. I doubt it would share a common sprue with the Defiler, but it would probably share common CAD elements.

On one hand, I like that they've leaned far more into the horror aspect. Really looks like an horrific beast of a machine in a literal sense.

On the other, I really liked the design of the old one (even if it was showing it's age) and this feels very different overall.

Quite agree. I prefer more mechanical stuff than an amalgamation of flesh and metal like this. It's not bad, with new interesting options, but I prefer the old one.

This is an overgrown six-legged Hellbrute.

This would also be in keeping with his army of indebted Soul Grinders in the recent Belisarius Cawl novel “Archmagos”.

minicompare up to date, kind of forgot that above 100mm there are only two round options; 130mm and 160mm, and the former would render all the details like skulls and trophy helmets too small, so 160 it is.

Should be fairly accurate plus/minus whatever shenanigans one could pull via leg posing.

I honestly like both for different reasons.  I'd like the current version to be a bit more robotic/mechanical, but I don't want it completely divorced from the flesh as I think it's an easy sign of "Here's some demon stuff growing out of this."

Also totally not thematic with the thousand sons, so no clue why they get a head option.

Why not? Rubrics are suits of dust, but I think more of the Thousand Sons range should be gribbly in contrast. It's one of the failings of those dumb robots we got

Massive improvement.

Oh this makes me happy. Emperor's Children were desperately needing some ranged support and this looks like a great way to add it into an army.

Oh great, they made it fleshy.

This doesn't really read as a Defiler to me, rather a Soul Grinder wearing armour.

Which is cool, but not a Defiler.

The Soulgrinder is more than a Defiler with abs though. It's a Defiler fully taken over by the daemon within that trades the most, of the guns for a melee weapons.

The new Defiler definitely nods at the Soul Grinder with the flesh bits but I don't think it's even close to full Soul Grinder.

I sort of agree, but take that model, slap a breastplate, shoulder pads and vambraces on it and you have the new defiler in concept.
