Hey all,

I had some friends ask if the new generic Red Corsairs power armoured models would be good to use for Horus Heresy to represent Blackshields or Traitor forces towards the time of the Siege of Terra. My initial suggestion is "maybe trim back some of the iconography and spikes, but for the most part they would fit what a lot of the traitors looked like at the time".

Agree or disagree?

I personally think that mixing/matching those kits with the MK II/III/VI would be a good balance of flavor/budget. I might be iffy on some of the weapons that the Corsairs wield being too close to 40k. Thoughts?

Yup I think they would be absolutely brilliant for this purpose. I converted some modern Chaos marines to use as Scouring-era Sons of Horus, but you could equally apply them to during the Heresy, as a few of the Legions were already getting quite 'far gone'. These Corsairs would be absolutely spot on for that too I think, like you say just a bit of removal of some of the extraneous chaos iconography.

My only struggle is figuring out which unit they could represent. Without any weapon swaps, they could pass as fancy Despoilers?

command squads, chieftains, terror squads, Sagar mazon, vets.

One thing I should mention as someone who has tried to make a scouring/end-heresy army is that doing a lot of conversion, custom work doesn't really work with AoD the game & armies, unless you have a lot of free hobby time.

The reason being HH3.0 demands big blocks of line infantry (50/60+) for a viable army, and unless you are building straight from sprue it takes up so much time.

I got about 15/16 marines into mine before realising this was never going to be an AoD army and instead I am using it for skirmish (KT, OPR) or early edition 40k, which has 25% of the mini count.

I possibly went a bit overboard (greenstuff conversion for chainmail, adding spikes and stuff) but to give you some idea it was taking me 2-3 hours to make one marine, in case you are thinking of doing similar you can learn from my mistakes!

this is why i start all my armies with 2 squads of vets.

Small model counts and i can easily turn them into squads of bolter marines without much hassle.

This sort of reminds me of some of the discussions I had with other players at my LGS during 1st edition when they had the legion-specific torsos/helmets/shoulder pads (now it's just helmets and shoulder pads). The main conflict was "entire army vs handful" of cosmetic upgrades. For me, I came down closer on the side of "handful/sparse", but it really depended on what the hobbyist was going for. I felt like if the hobbyist wants to display a "crusade era" army, then being more uniformed made sense because the legions were more unified. When making an army to represent one actually in the middle/end of the Horus Heresy, that sparse upgrades was better to show the rapid changes in army structure (if there was any), and the replenishing of forces with reused armour or quick deployment of reserved stock of armaments. So I was a hobbyist that wanted mid-late Heresy, and did sparse upgrades, spreading out helmets and torsos, and even mixing armour marks in squads and painting different helmet colors/honour markings to show how cobbled together the army was. The only exception was shoulder pads, because they stood out the most with the iconography being sculpted and not matching how the transfers looked.

One thing to consider is finding out when the Godwyn pattern bolter came into use. Chances are it could have come out when the mk 7 was introduced if you wanted to do really late heresy/early scouring. It's plausible both could of come into use outside of the siege because of the way mechanicus data sharing worked.

Good news, the Godwyn bolter is very similar to the Ultima pattern bolter which was in use by Isstvan.

That's my favourite combi-flamer pattern. The FW studio also converted some combi-flamers for the Salamanders featured in the Exemplary Battles series but we never got to see a proper close up of that.
