Rowland
Hello all, I’m very new to 40K. When it first came out tbh I was a bit sceptical of the genre and started a Napoleonics army (pouring the metal into molds etc). 40k was expensive even then and Orcs in space seemed heretical. Many years and many expensive hobbies later I have started boardgaming with the wife and another couple. Surprisingly one of our favourites atm is Samurai battles (Memoir ‘44 meets Shogun Total war). I saw this as an opportunity to dip into wargaming again. I looked at several systems (ECW and Napoleonics) but was drawn to the staying power of 40K and its fantasy setting. I no longer wanted to recreate historic battles but just have fun. I have, as always gone waaay OTT. I started with a Starter set Tyranids v Space Marines. I have to say the models are beautifully cast, with lots of detail. I then did my usual thing and fell into a carefully laid trap by GW. Obviously I needed the full rules and decide on a faction…I went Blood Angels who sounded suitably bonkers and dark. Maroon is a favourite colour and I have a massive tube of Maroon Acrylic so settled on the Crour Blades who, fittingly battle Tyranids in melee. So…I needed the rules, a Space Marines Codex, a Blood Angels Codex and a Tyranids Codex! I got to painting. This I really enjoy. We have a very nice cushion at home with an Octopus on it. The upper is a metallic rust colour and the body is teal. I’ve watched hundreds of hours of miniature painting videos and liked the Grimdark thing. So I converted my starter set into two combat patrols with the purchase of a couple of extra figures and painted them up. On finishing them I paraded them in front of the wife. She wasn’t impressed. The Tyranids are quite pretty but the crour blades were very dark. I wasn’t that keen on the overall look myself. The Maroon hid the carefully placed crossed swords and I was becoming more of a fan of the ‘eavy metal style. So I gave her the Space marine codex and told her to choose. She felt the most colourful were…Exorcists. She’s right. In the book they have an orangey glow. I like the back story and love a bit of orange. So there we are: Slightly Grim dark/but colourful Tyrannids v ‘eavy metal orange Exorcists. I’m enjoying the painting and army planning so much I’ve got another starter box and a few more to make 1500 points. it has begun… Dr_Ruminahui, BadgersinHills, Karhedron and 3 others 6 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387728-oh-dear-what-have-i-done%E2%80%A6/ Share on other sites

W.A.Rorie
Welcome to the B&C, @Rowland! I loved hearing your story, and your reasoning for your armies! Exorcists have a great story and I am working on an army of them too, but I am going the metallic armor red look for mine and all Phobos. There are a few book available for Exorcists in various media sources (print, kindle, audio) Oath of Damnation, The Successors (The Empty Place Short Story), Within these Walls. Also there is an Exorcist in the various Deathwatch novels. Can’t wait to see your models Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387728-oh-dear-what-have-i-done%E2%80%A6/#findComment-6163473 Share on other sites

Brother Tyler
16 minutes ago, Rowland said: Apologies, I am neither an artist or photographer… Just my personal take on things... As long as you're putting effort into painting your miniatures, you have no need to apologize. The satisfaction I get isn't from seeing exquisitely painted miniatures (though those are always worthy of respect and admiration). What I enjoy most is seeing that hobbyists have invested time and effort in painting their miniatures to whatever level they are capable of. I would love to see your miniatures arrayed for battle on the tabletop against my own miniatures. And if you think that your skills can improve (in both painting and photography), there are tons of online resources, including within this community, to assist you in that effort. I notice similarly basing across all three forces. Is that a deliberate theme-based choice? Shard of Magnus
Welcome to the forums! The photos and paint schemes are perfectly acceptable. I’d be more than happy to see any of the three on the gaming field. We’re all hobbyists of differing interests and skill levels. The individual interpretations and varied styles are part of what has given 40K staying power. What you’ve shared shows promise of things to come as your grow your forces. Rowland
Thanks Gents, I’m learning loads…recently my painting has improved after seeing a video by Juan Hidalgo who uses a No3 for everything. As for the bases @Brother Tyler yeah, I was looking for a Tyranid invaded ashen wasteland type thing when I came across a video by the streaking grime firm who make a lava/video, I liked it so gave it a go. I’ve got a lava game mat and tbh it’s all a bit much, so I’m just using the terrain lava stuff, painting it black and dry brushing Ash grey over it. I’ve plonked a few “Tyranid eggs” around using BB gun pellets, PVA and superglue. Rowland
@Brother Tyler thanks for noticing the runes. I had a blast actually painting them on my terminators. And to complete my painted combat patrol-ish here are my “Characters”. Rusted Boltgun
Love the cushion. The cushion itself and using it as inspiration! Oddly enough, my 'nids have a similar scheme. That's a great tilting should on that Captain (amongst lots of nice painting). Congratulations on falling down the rabbit hole, enjoy the ride!
