Guys,

I loved the description of the Weird boy and after getting the 10th edition starter set (Marines v Tyranids) and increasing those armies to 1500 points or so some of the joy is lacking.

Orks are probably the answer.  The thing is with me is that I like a deep dive.  So I started reading some Black Library stuff.  I started with the Eisenhorn omnibus and I’m really enjoying that.  I’m not “committed” to the inquisition so it might as well be the Red Rising series for all I care.

However, and call me a heretic, but I’m also reading Oaths of damnation (my marines are Exorcists because my wife likes the colour) and I’ve since bought a couple of issues of white dwarf to see what they’re like and tbh all the lore stuff is a bit heavy and sucks the anarchic madness out of the game.

So…I see there are Ork based novels.  Are they written in a bonkers, comedy style or is it all grim dark future stuff?

Secondly can you make stuff up about Orks?  For example, I read a little description of Gretchen(?) who seem to be the Orks cannon fodder and was sitting in my garden watching our hens do their thing and I thought I could call a unit of Gretchen (if not some Orks) “Chikinz” give them big old red combs and maybe wattles and a necklace of feathers.  Once upon a time they were called chickens so leant into it, own the name and wear the marks with pride.  My Boyz will probably all be in bowler hats and painted up like Droogs who are basically psychotic hooligans.  That sort of nonsense.

I know I can do this because they’re my plastic army men etc but will I find a factions rules to suit?

I don’t have the codex yet and aren’t sure if I need to wait until 11th comes out.

Rambling nonesense but thanks for reading,

Rowly

I cant answer you on the novels as I havent read them. If you want some good grimdark novels in 40k, Go find Storm of Iron, the Night Lord trilogy and Lord of the Night.

As for your guys, I cant think of any one klan that emphasizes insanity really. There is a ton of lore to go on though and much of it is contradictory. In old lore, the klans fought as klans and not the mish mash we see today. You have a goff warboss and the vast majority of his waaagh is going to be Goffs with some tagger ons, mercenaries and freebootaz. Stormboyz used to march in formations and wear uniforms. Blood Axes were mercenaries for hire and even Imperial commanders would collect teef after battles with other orks so they could pay them. Blood Axes also wore camo. The pants rarely matched the shirt. The colors were garish and only luck of the draw had them match the terrain they were in. They emulated Imperial forces and their camo patterns but couldnt quite get their heads around the purpose of it.

Hello Galron,

I managed to find a NOS set of Godrangs Gitstompas sans box and decals much cheaper than if I got them separately.

I’m going to call them the Veeaitchesses.  At some point in their past they managed to find some old movies and emulate the violent ones.

My boys will be Droogs, my Koptas will be Nellies painted after Bonds little Nellie and the Deff Dred will emulate Ripley in the mech suit.  Haven’t decided on the War boss yet but you get the idea (maybe Kirk Douglas in the Vikings).  Hell, I may even paint the bases bright green…or purple so you can’t see them obvs.

I will build an army from there.  The less I know about the actual lore the better.  For some reason all the deep made up nonsense GW come up with about the lore doesn’t do it for me.  The original ideas seemed much more “out there”.

I will take a look at your book selection, thanks.  Is the horus heresy series worth a go?

ATM I’m trying to work out wether milliput or greenstuff will be better for making bowler hats and jockstraps!
