You should be fine painting them however you want, whether ultramarines, blood angels, some other official chapter, or your own colour scheme.

If they are a special named character (so, an Epic Hero with a given chapter keyword, like Calgar of the ultramarines) you couldn't field them using the Blood Angels chapter rules, but that doesn't prevent you from painting them as a blood angel (though, some players might look at you funny).  That said, the captain in the box isn't such a character and I would expect is viewed by most players as a "generic" captain in terminator armour, even if the model did have a name at some point.

Hope that helps, and welcome to B+C.  You might want to go to the Introduce Yourself forum and let folks say hi to you.

I'd even point out he only has a "name" during Combat Patrol - i.e. the datasheet with his name is specifically for Combat Patrol and not the wider game at large.  Even with that said, the Combat Patrol datasheet does not have a (sub) Faction keyword like a Chapter name and he can be from any chapter in the wider game or the Combat Patrol.

TLDR: Unless you MUST follow painting instructions invent your own faction colour scheme and they can be whatever you want them to be.  Try combining decals to make your own Faction badge.

I am currently going through this process myself but from a slightly different position…

I purchased the starter set (Tyranids v Space Marines). I play casually with a friend.  I looked into the factions and liked the sound of Blood Angels and had the intention of expanding my army.  So I set about painting the Space marines as Crour blades.  I then realised that to play the larger games I needed codexes.  Blood Angels require the Space Marines Codex AND the Blood Angels codex.  So I ended up getting Both (as well as the Tyranids codex) and the rulebook.

TBH it was a waste of money (to me) because, but not only, edition 11 was then announced.  I ended up changing the Crour blades to a “Vanilla” Space marines faction Exorcists.

Now, here’s the rub…My friend and I take 5 hours to finish 5 rounds of Combat Patrol (CP).  Neither of us think we could spare the time to play additional units in a larger army or faff with multiple loadouts and all the strategems.

However, we will need some added “flavour” as times go on.  So I looked at other Space marine CPs.  In my effort to increase my Exorcist Army to 1000 points I realised I had the majority of figures for about 4 CP’s.

Strike Force Octavius

Stormglaive Hunters

Rampart Force

Mordekais Judgement

with the addition of a heavy intercessor squad, Suboden Khan, Impulsor, Inceptor squad and a Redemptor Dreadnaught.

Although thats still 5 additional purchases it would make a decent army.

I began to think I could paint them as intended but realised that would limit me fielding the lot as one congruent army.

So I’m now thinking I should always have started my Space marine painting by making my own faction colours so the likes of Suboden Khan would fit.  There’s no reason he couldn’t be painted as an Exorcist but I’m getting a bit fed up with the idea of being constrained by the imagination of GW.

I’m currently toying with the idea of changing the Pauldrons and arms on my army to take them away from lore specific Exorcists.
