Karhedron
My Death Company are finally crossing the Rubicon Primaris and I am trying to decide how to paint them. In particular, I am trying to work out how to paint the saltaires on their shoulder pads. I struggle to paint straight lines freehand at the best of times. And painting them on a compound curved surface? Does anyone have any clever tips for painting the crosses please? Ovidius Incertus
Masking tape is clutch. You can paint your pauldron entirely red or get a close approximation of the saltire in red, then wait til your paint has fully dried and apply your tape to mask of the saltire shape. Then just paint your black around it. That will get you a crispy edge. You can use the technique with a brush or an airbrush. That's how I always did my Death Company. Fast enough if you do them in batch painting. Tamiya has multiple tape widths that will work on pauldrons or even knees. Grotsmasha
Make sure to apply the red over the tape first, then it will be the red that bleeds under the tape, so when you've done the black and pull the tape, I'll be a crisp line with no bleed Firedrake Cordova, Karhedron and Heraclite 2 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387858-how-to-paint-crosses-on-death-company/#findComment-6168750 Share on other sites
Karhedron
Love the masking tape idea. I have used it before for railway modelling, I don't know why I didn't think of that. What width do you think would be right. 2mm looks roughly right but open to correction. I'd try the 2mm, then all f it's too slim, I'd just double up with an overlap Karhedron 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387858-how-to-paint-crosses-on-death-company/#findComment-6168761 Share on other sites
Karhedron
I gave it a go and the results were not bad. A little bit of bleed where the tapes crossed (even though I sprayed red before black) but I can tidy that up with a brush I think. 2mm seems pretty decent thickness. It looks bold without being too wide. They also do 1.5mm width if you want something slightly finer. The crosses are not perfectly regular as lining up the tapes exactly is really hard but I think DC don't matter too much. I think the bleed actually looks decent, as it looks like battle damage and wear. Whether you want wear or not is totally up to you, of course Karhedron 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387858-how-to-paint-crosses-on-death-company/#findComment-6169491 Share on other sites
