The Lost Son
Hi, so this is a double headed question. Firstly does anyone have any experience with the Zone Mortalis Tiles - are they sturdy, prone to warping etc. Secondly would they make a good base for terrain in a non Necromunda style (straight 40k city fight styling). So with recent talk of new terrain and having moved recently into a house it's got me thinking of building a gaming space, but space is still limited so was thinking of making it in 1' square sections to be combinable but also store able. I'm assuming that affixing the tiles to wood would be a safer option but will they be workable or is it going to be easier to build each square from scratch? Thanks in advance for any response Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/387958-zone-mortalis-tiles/ Share on other sites
Antarius
Disclaimer: I haven't got a lot of experience with them, except for owning a pack that I got in a trade and hearing what people have been saying about them, so I have held some in my hands but not actually done anything with them. AFAICT they are a little prone to being slightly warped from the get go (mine weren't but I've heard people talk about them needing to be straightened out), but nothing that can't be fixed relatively easy and I don't think they'll warp from being painted, stored etc. At a glance, I'd say they seem like they'd be sturdy enough on their own, but many people seem to affix them to wood or similar. I don't think I'd personally bother with that, though. They are nice enough and they definitely could be used for regular 40K, but I honestly think there'd be both better and cheaper alternatives. They are all identical, so there's not a lot of variation, they're textured in a way that makes placing non-zone mortalis terrain a bit difficult and they don't have any sort of mechanism for holding them together, so you'd still need a gaming board/a couple of bigger board section to put them on, at which point a gaming mat would be a lot easier storage-wise and a fraction of the price. Overall, I'd say that they're a very expensive option that's not tailor-made for what you want to do, so personally, I think I'd total up the price of the amount of packs you'd need to buy and then see what else I could buy/make with the same budget. Ovidius Incertus
I'll echo Antarius. I've got a few sets for Necromunda. None of mine out of 3 boxes have been warped, but I have heard of it happening. Not much variation at all if you're just using them for essentially a board; variation comes from putting ZM or Necromunda terrain on them, getting verticality, etc. Most importantly, they're really expensive. One pack gets you only a 2'x2' board, so you really need 3 packs to get a non-rectangular board, if that's what you want. That's a very large investment in tiles (like over $210 USD from Amazon). There are 3D printed options available that are slightly less costly. The Lost Son
Thank you both @Antarius & @Ovidius Incertus, I thought that might be the case. I also for some misguided reason thought they were a better price than they are, c'est la vie. Having sat on the idea a bit more it would make more sense to just make something if I'm already thinking of cutting 1 x 1 squares of wood for a base.
