As someone with little to no experience with the game since 8th Edition, I'm curious how fun/playable/balanced were the starter sets. I'm considering buying the Armageddon Starter to have a simplified 'at home' version of 40k to potentially play with my non-40K friends (i.e. trying to sell it as a boardgame but with the caveat that I get to paint some cheap-ish Orks) but if historically the game in the box was off, I probably shouldn’t bother.

What are your experiences and informed guesses about Armageddon?

I saw a comment in one of the other threads that the data cards in this box were written as if to balance the two sides and would be revised when the relevant codex is released to balance the units across the game as a whole.

I don't know how accurate (still not played a proper game of big 40k) that is but I'm certainly going to run the box as above. I'm not even going to paint it (heretic!) before we start as I'm determined to play 40k at least once in my 50th year. I'll only be playing with Boltgun Jr anyway!

Interestingly, whilst there are concerns that Crusade is on the decline, I saw one retailer market Armageddon as a 'campaign in a box' and they aren't wrong...

It looks like the teams are roughly balanced. They may also release combat patrol profiles for what's in the box, like they did with 10th ed leviathan, which are supposed to be balanced not only against each other, but any other combat patrol if you can make one from figures you own or buy a combat patrol set for another faction.

My only concern at this point is that not all the rules are in the box - the Core Rules directs you to the app. Now, I'm not entirely sure whether this is so you get the most up to date information or whether some rules are 'optional' or what...

I do find it a bit galling - I prefer a boxed game where everything you need to play is in the box, even if some elements of the rules are poorly written or somethings just don't work.

Having said that, if all the rules are available for free over the internet, that puts a different spin on things (and if they are available for free, GW, then please just make them all available for download).

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'll make sure to do more research here. I think I've also seen some mention online about the core rules already needing an errata/update. Which, if true, seems a bit concerning.

Thanks! All of this looks reassuring. This might just push me to buy my first starter since... Assault on Black Reach, incidentally, also a SM v ORKZ set.

Honestly, model size scaling aside. The Assault on Black Reach units would complement the new Starter set pretty well.
