TLDR Would the MK 2 marines from HH combine will enough with the current GK models to give them a bit of an upscale? Use GK heads, pauldrons and weapons. I've trimmed off bits of bling and stuck them to regular Primaris before.

I bought the Big HH box a while back but changed my mind to Mechanicum.  That left me with a lot of marines that I was going to eBay but I really liked the look of the Saturnine Dread and Terminators (I'm old enough to have bought the prequel terminators when they came out!)  I started looking at potential conversions...stumbled on Dreadknight conversions.

Which lead me to looking at GK and potential conversion opportunities.

As I don't have any GK the sensible solution is to save my money for an eventual range refresh. Plus I have three armies that still need to be painted.

But that's boring and it's raining so I can't do any of the outdoors work I wanted to....

There are a couple of Sanctic Conclave boxes floating around at reasonable prices.  That's a lot of heads, pauldrons and weapons for Terminators and PA guys.  The Dreadknight can probably squeeze a couple of spare weapons to start converting the Saturnine Dread.

The MK 2 models are smaller than Primaris but the banding on the legs would make a good guid to paint in the GK gold script.

The Terminators would be the main problem. They don't have a right hand...might look a little goofy with a regular GK terminator arm or hand spliced in there.  The shoulders are all wrong and removing those funky shoulder pads would be criminal, IMO.  So they'd be sold to buy a box of Deathwing Terminators as I've seen some good conversions of those.

I've seen pictures of the new MK 2 where they are noticeably smaller than Primaris, but I've had folks tell me that they are the same size...?

Short answer: It should work.

Long answer: It would be a lot of work, but doable. As person that has a huge GK Army and I have the parts to make Tortuga True Scale body versions. it does seem pricey. But I am not one to talk as I am building a Custom Assault Terminator Squad from Deathwing Knights and Assault Terminators. It is a very interesting idea and would love to see it.

HH models are larger then firstborn GK and smaller than Primaris.

Terminators would work as there is 3d printed shins for GKT.

That does sound as if, for the work involved, I'd end up with models that were scaled a bit better but that wouldn't quite fit with the Primaris scale.  I've seen some very nice Deathwing Termie conversions.  Certainly better than what I could manage trying to push Saturnine Terminators into being GK.

The Tortuga Bay stuff looks nice but I think import duty into the UK would eat up a lot of savings.

On reflection, if I do go ahead with a GK conversion project, I think I'd be better prowling eBay for cheap Primaris Bodies. The Saturine Dreadnough to DreadKnight conversion being the exception as I'm not a fan of the actual DK model.

Of course the most sensible option is simply to wait.

Thank you

I was looking at GK recently and their Combat Patrols, the latest one is better.  I wondered about the scale thing.  Aren’t they just “far away”?

Sadly no...... Crowe is scaled up as he is almost 5 years old now (Hexfire release August 2021) and Primaris was released 9 years ago.  Voldus the next Newest Grey Knight was released March 2017 and scaled to the grey knight kits and the Strike Squads and Terminators were released in 2011 during 5th Edition.  My Grey Knights are older than my kids....

Hard part is the Aegis armor is hard to replicate using primaris or the new terminators. One of the reasons I did go with Tortuga.  Another reason is the Imperial Agents and Inquisitors are almost the same size as the current kits which is visually off putting.  Tortuga is probably the more expensive route. But they do look cool.

Is it a primaris breaking the lore thing…i.e. will GW and the BL have to find a workaround as to how they become Primaris?  Is there a reason they aren’t/can’t?

Im making my rip off Non Sanguinary Guard Pretorain guard units a bit GK by adding some old steampunk knight helmets I’ve ordered off etsy.

Officially yes as Cawl was unaware of the Grey Knights as was most of the Imperium. It was not until Roboute Guilliman returned and was presented with the Primaris did Voldus reveal the Grey Knights.

Now this can all be retconned at a later date.

Really the only thing that stops people is how much it costs to make cool grey knights using multiple kits

Plan B

I now have two sets of Armageddon Marines

Saturnine HH box minus the powered armour guys.

CP Grey Knights

GM in Dreadknight

Box of Deathwing Terminators

First idea is to use the CP bits to start converting the Armageddon guys

Intercessors > Strike

Eradicators > Purgation

Jump Pack > possibly teleport Interceptors

Captain > Champion or other hero

Librarian > Librarian

Chaplain > remove or mag pack to make foot chaplain?

Deathwing > GK terminators

Saturnine dread > GMDK

Actual GK kit > DK possibly using the CP box dread front piece to convert

Saturnine hero > hero in terminator armour

Saturnine terminators > Paladins

I think Saturnine terminators will need smaller bases. I’m will probably need more GK bits when I get to converting the second Strike squad.

Second idea

Return the GK kits. Use the remainder to either build Exorcists or Black Templars.

I am sticking with the old idea of GK being somehow involved with Exorcists. The BT anti-psyker schtick feels like it fits folks who have cast out a daemon.

So I would use the BT codex and models for either Exorcists or BT. Would just be the colour scheme that changes.
