I have an idea for a chapter, which area on the forum should I post in?

Hello,

Whilst I know they’re my plastic army men and I can do what I like, I would still like to be compliant with the lore.  Being a beginner I have little experience in the Pitfalls and so on.

I have the basis of an idea, where can I run it past those who know their Lore?

Is it a loyalist, Renegade, or Traitor chapter? Is  it a Parent Chapter (one of the Founding 18 Legions/ Chapters) or a Successor Chapter? That is how it would be decided.

What is the idea?

To be brief: I liked lavender and white for my Loyalist Space Marines.  Trying to justify Lavender (in a manly way, ahem!) I thought they attack at dusk.  They have a sunset as their badge and are called the Setting sons.  Whilst searching for a 1st founding Chapter I came across Dusk Raiders who sounded perfect, I like their whole combat doctrine etc but they became the traitorous Death Guard.  However…a chap called Nathan Garro remained faithful and he was called on by a bloke called Malcador to gather some Astartes who then formed the Grey Knights who secretly work for the inquisition.

Now, I like irony and humour and I asked on here where all the cows are with all the leather consumption.  And I’m reading the Eisenhorn Omnibus so it’s the only little bit of lore I know.  So…

What if, secretly, there was another Astartes (9 instead of 8) who were taken by the inquisition to fight against threats to their valuable supplies of Grox etc from the Xenos threat.

I was torn between Rising or setting sons but Setting sons sounds more fatalistic because their progenitor was a traitor so they aren’t encouraged to expand.  I also needed to explain how they were supplied with newer armour etc…

Does that work?

IIRC, Primaris Marines were created with old geneseeds so some are created from Heretic Geneseeds. Also some Successor Chapters are rumored to be from the Traitor Legions that remained loyal:

  • Blood Ravens may be Thousand Sons Successors
  • Iron Skulls may be Iron Warriors
  • Carcharodon's may be Night Lords
  • Minotaur's may be World Eaters

Also some of the Traitors that remained loyal, were listed as successors under a different Parent chapter. Also some chapters keep their Parent chapter a secret, The Exorcists are successors of Dorn (this is disputed amongst the fans, even though GW says they are) and The Grey Knights' Primarch is unknown.

Some Chapters are known to work with the Inquisition more than others. Grey Knights (Ordo Malleus Puritian), Exorcists (Ordo Malleus Radical), Red Hunters (Inquisition Markings are part of Chapter Logo),  and the Inquisition has pacts of assistance with the Angels Sanguine, Black Consuls, Brazen Claws, and Praetors of Orpheus.

Rising Sons sounds Asian themed which the Lavender and White would be good for White Scars successor.

Setting Sons does sound very fatalistic.

So even if your Loyalist Death Guard chapter was put under a different "Primarch" and renamed they would still be resupplied and Inquisitors would probably be assigned to watch them through the time to observe that they remained loyal.

So when you say put under a different Primarch…?

Silver Skulls are listed as Ultramarines so their Primarch is listed as Roboute Guilliman. It may really be Perturabo and they are the loyalist Iron Warriors.  Even the skulls logos and color schemes are the same.

I did toy with the idea of a White Scars successor but they tend to be vehicle heavy and it means getting yet another codex and now I know about Dusk Raiders…  So, if I’m reading you correctly they could have originated from the Dusk Raiders and Mortywhatsisface the geneseed having been stored before the heresey but now because no traitorous seeds would ever be used (ahem) they “technically” are under Robert Gulliwhatsit or whoever the Grey Knights dude is.

Does the Primarch inform the codex?  i.e. if I choose someone other than Robert, say Whoever Khan of the white scars do I have to do the white scars tactics stuff or can they be vanilla marines?

Either Or. I am building Howling Griffons, a Ultramarines Successor Chapter. I should be using either Ultramarines or the Generic Detachments that do not list a Chapter, but I can not use White Scars Detachment IF I am using an UM Epic Character, that is really the only restriction. There is nothing stopping me from playing my Army of terminators as 1st Company Task Force or Orbital Assault Force (Generic), Inner Circle Task Force (Dark Angels), Emperor's Shield (Imperial Fists), and Reclamation Force (Ultramarines) besides the use of Epic Characters.

One of the best things about a DIY force is that you're not really bound to any specific codex or construct unless you want to be. I've played my guys as Imperial Fists, Firehawks, Raven Guard, and Iron Hands, but I'm more of a collector so I've got a wide variety of units just because.

If there is two pieces of advice I would give someone starting a new DIY it's that you don't have to tie yourself down to a primarch just yet, and not everything has to be justified. It's 40K, we've forgotten more than we'll ever learn. My opinion is that finding out what your thing/theme is, then you can back trace their history and inception if it's important for their story.

Speaking of stories, the Liber is the subforum to have a look at, Brother Tyler has a pinned post about DIY resources including templates and guides. Further, the Liber is the home to Index Astartes articles (about our DIY creations) and the occasional Iron Gauntlet challenge (a difficult year long challenge center around creating a DIY force).

You have options.

My main recommendation is that you create your own blog for this DIY Chapter. You can then create topics in various forums depending on where you're going with the Chapter and whose expertise you're looking for. The two key forums I recommend are the + ADEPTUS ASTARTES + and + THE LIBER + forums. The first, naturally, is where anyone who thinks they know anything about the Adeptus Astartes will find your work, while the second is where anyone who thinks they know anything about DIY creation will find your work. Also, both of those forums have links to a variety of resources that might prove helpful. If you determine that your DIY Chapter is descended from a specific Chapter/Legion and that Chapter Legion has its own subforum (e.g., the Ultramarines and Death Guard each have their own forum), you can also post topics in the appropriate forum. What you would do is post updates to your blog, and you could then create/update topics in the appropriate forum(s) to bring members to your blog. For example, you might work on some background for your Chapter that involves understanding of the Death Guard as one of your blog updates. You could then copy the URL of that blog update and post it in the Death Guard forum as a topic (or as an update to an existing topic). In that way, members who frequent the Death Guard forum might come into your blog to engage in discussion there. And you could easily post update links about the same blog entry in multiple forums. For example, you might create a topic in + THE LIBER + in which you post a link as a reply in that topic each time you post a blog update. By doing this as a blog, you can organize things the way you want; and if you later decide to reorganize things, you have that freedom.

An alternative to conducting this as a blog is to use one of the forums. In this, + THE LIBER + is probably the best as that forum focuses on the DIY creation process. While doing this, you are welcome to create topics in other forums as necessary to get outreach to members who might not frequent that forum. The previous Death Guard example works, posting questions specific to Death Guard "experts" in that forum and drawing them over to your main topic.

Thanks, I will take a look.  I don’t really want to go full DIY atm, that’s why I was trying to find a “starting” place.  Not really understanding the whole primarch thing I assumed the first born was the place to go.  I found a reference to Dawn Raiders and got a bit stuck on them over any of the others…then I go and find out they end up being traitors…doh!

So I’m hoping my simple idea will get me started (a hook to hang my hat on) and I can build from there if needs be, just didn’t want it to be an absolute No go.

I have the Blood Angels and Tyranids supplements and use the app for playing with Army listings.  Vanilla Space Marines don’t have a character figure as such and I see other factions/chapters do.  How important are they?  Dante doesn’t seem that powerful and, if such a daft thing can be said…In real life he wouldn’t turn up for that many skirmishes…
