Hello all! I am slowly accumulating several small armies for myself and friends for 5th Edition Warhammer 40,000. My question today is mostly pertaining to what *actually* is and what isn't in this specific time period in the Grim Dark Future!

So with this discussion, it's mostly a series of saying what *is* directly and what isn't. For example, the CICATRIX MALEDICTUM is not a thing. Meanwhile, the SISTERS OF BATTLE (as of M.36) have been recently divided up into their Orders.

My hope is that I can utilize this information to exclude things that take place after this time period and have a detailed enough knowledge of what is during these time periods to help in the creation of stories and lore unbound!

Clarifying Warhammer 40,000

Exclude T'au they should be in their medieval at start of your period.

Baddab war ain't happening yet, so you can have loyal astral claws.

Obviously necrons, since most of them are sleeping, though Trazin already woke up and stealing things.

Welcome to B&C!

My understanding is that everything (background wise) established prior to 8th edition is accurate for the time period you are looking at.  So:

1.  As noted, no cicatrix.

2.  Cadia is still standing, having just successfully withstood the 13th Dark Crusade led by Abaddon.  Eldrad is currently trapped in a blackstone fortress. Ursula Creed isn't around yet, with the Cadian forces still being led by her father.  Indeed, most current Millitarum characters post date this period, with notable exceptions such as Commissar Yarrick and Marbo.

3.  None of the loyalist primarchs have returned, and the chaos primarchs are largely absent as well.

4.  No primaris marines, or repulsor lift space marine vehicles other than landspeeders and some very rare jetbikes.  Plasma weapons are still considered rare.

5.  The 2nd ork invasion of Armeggedon is ending, with Gazgul having left the planet with Yarrick on his tail.

6.  Macragge (Ultramarines home world) is being invaded by a tyranid hive fleet.

And I wouldn't describe the Orderization of the sisters as "recent" at this point, but rather as well established, having occurred many (well, 4-ish) millennia prior.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: I disagree with kabaakaba suggestions, as Tau were very much around during the time period of 5th edition, as were the Necrons,. who had just gotten their current background as a digitized biological race rather than their previous one as pure robots.  Yes, most of the Necrons were still sleeping, but I believe that is still true in the current edition.

Custodes are Guarding the Imperial Palace and do not leave the Palace

Sisters of Silence are on Black Ships or in hiding.

No Primaris Marines, Marine Hover Tanks, Redemptor Class Dreadnoughts.

Post War of the Beast

The First Tyrannic War has not occurred.

Tyranids have not been encountered.

None of the Wars for Armageddon have occurred.

Just for clarification, are you asking about a specific point in time (e.g., that represented by the 5th edition of the game)? Or are you asking about a range of time periods for which there might be different answers (e.g., M36, M37, M38)?

If you're looking for the latter, starting points for information (until someone here takes the time to break things down into a simpler format) are the timelines/chronologies on Lexicanum or the Warhammer 40,000 Fandom Wiki.

In this case it's a range of different time periods where there will be different answers. My issue is that I know alot and haven't quite remembered when is what and when what isn't!

I figured doing it this way could be a bit more fun and draw some discussion beyond just looking at the GLORIOUS LEXICANUM!

In 001. M36 you can certainly exclude Tau - but you can also exclude Sisters, since they aren't even founded properly for another couple of hundred years.

Conversely, if it's M.39, the Tau are already in their second Sphere of Expansion, and recruit the Vespid very early in M.39, going by the Lexicanum references for those timelines.

As early as mid M.37, the Tau are establishing their first off-world colony.

None of the Wars for Armageddon have occurred.

And while the First Tyrannic War hasn't happened yet, Hive Fleet Tiamet has already arrived in M.35 or slightly earlier, and established a set of colony worlds (very atypical for Tyranids, usually they just drain worlds dry and move on).

"The Legion of Ouroboris" (another hive fleet) was reported at some point in M.36.

And the Zoats were present from late M.38 to late M.39 as "Hive Fleet Colossus".

Late M.39 is probably a little early for Genestealer Cults though - they start appearing in M.40, though the nature of the threat is not recognised till Hive Fleet Behemoth turns up.

Custodes can also be justified as leaving the Palace during this 4 millennium period (001.M36 to 999.M39) - a force of the Dread Host did so in 999.M.37 and participated in a battle on Andromax, alongside the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Minotaurs Chapter  against the Night Lords "Envoys to the Omnissiah" event.
