Is counts as still a thing?

Hey guys, trying to actually start playing again after missing a few editions. 

 

Back in the day you could model a character to be a counts as for your chapter as long as the gear matched.  Is this still a thing?  I mean at sanctioned events not on my local table for funsies.

 

For example if you want to run say uriel ventris you just have to buy the model and paint it blue instead of a generic captain with sword.

It still exists, but probably depends entirely on the tournament. Official GW, the conversion should have roughly the same silhouette as the model it represents. Other non GW you don't even have to use GW models, like a 3d print, but still must be the same size and shape.

I think the thing most people casually will care about is base size (As that's the biggest impact to measuring things) and then having a somewhat similar model size, and at least OBVIOUS weapons; we are all Imperium fanboys so we know what a bolter looks like, but most of the Xenos weaponry could be anything and I would just nod my head and agree.

 

In actual tournaments, always check with the TO.  They'll have prognostications that must be followed that supersede anything else.

Whilst obviously if you're playing in a tournament/event there will be slightly tighter expectations, as long as it's clear what everything is and there's no egregious discrepancies in size/base size* you should be fine, honestly. The main thing that matters is nobody is confused as to what any given model is and what it's armed with.

 

 

*When I say "egregious" I mean things like "running an RT Tinboy as a Gorkanaut" or "putting Gretchin on 50mms". Quite a lot of models have had their standard base sizes change to varying degrees, and in some case (for example Termagants, whose new bases are microscopically larger than the old ones to such a pitifully small amount you cannot tell they're on bigger bases with the two next to each other on the table) the difference is so minor it really doesn't affect anything. There's some cases which could be a bit trickier (Tyranid Warriors were on 40mms for the longest time but got a boost to 50mm for no discernible reason- I keep mine on 40mms because I don't fancy rebasing them and I think they look better on the smaller bases) but in all but the most ridiculous cases it still doesn't really change much anyway.

I do it all the time. Base size and roughly the same model size is most important. Equipment on a special character is less important as establishing the first two as you can say the Super cool spear my known special character has is a throwing hammer(using Arjack and Asterion Moloc as a comparison). Other things might be a bit harder to pull off. I ask permission when I use my Night Lord Daemon prince since he has a jump pack instead of wings, although viewing it in the light of 11th, that is more likely a handicap than it is a benefit since I dont have a wing tip to toe into cover for the bonus.
