The Relic-Bearer

 

For eleven months, a young pilgrim followed the Black Templars across the war-torn wastes of Armageddon. He carried no weapon and wore no colours of his own, keeping instead to the Templars' wake as they advanced from one battlefield to the next. Where others saw discarded equipment and battlefield refuse, the pilgrim saw holy relics. He collected spent bolt shells, broken blades, damaged ammunition, fragments of armour and anything else that had been carried into battle by the Emperor's servants. He cleaned what he could and carefully stored each piece, believing that one day he might return these sacred objects to their rightful owners.

 

At the end of the eleventh month, the pilgrim finally approached a Black Templar Chaplain and knelt before him. He opened his battered satchel and presented the collection he had gathered over the course of the campaign. The Chaplain, however, saw not a devoted pilgrim but a scavenger and thief who had been stealing from the dead. His bolt pistol was drawn, and a single shot ended the pilgrim's life.

 

A Techmarine later examined the equipment the dead man had carried. Among the collection were weapons and fragments of wargear that had been lost during battles months before, many of which could be returned to service. The Techmarine understood what the pilgrim had been trying to do. Though the young man's body was shattered beyond saving, his devotion had been genuine, and the Techmarine saw fit to honour it. His head was removed, sanctified, and fitted with augmetics, a powerful lamp replacing one of his former eyes.

 

Now the pilgrim follows the Black Templars once more, though he no longer walks in their footsteps. His servo-skull searches the battlefield after every engagement, illuminating fallen weapons and lost wargear so that they may be recovered and returned to the Emperor's service. He has no name now, only a function, but the Templars have come to know him as Relic-Bearer... a silent servant of the Eternal Crusade who finally received the sacred duty he had sought in life.

Well-read in esoteric sources and in ideologies the Creed names radical. She will follow an idea far enough to test whether it is a knife or a key. She will not kneel to it. The Imperial Cult remains the law of her labour. She looks for joins between Terran history and the Cult where those joins affirm the Creed rather than dissolve it.

Not a saint. Not a soldier. A reader who has learned to look as if she already knows the next line and whether she will need a pen or a pistol to deliver it.

I. STANDING
These men are the Bonded-Host Levy Militia of a federation of three houses dwelling within the domain of the
Chapter Keep. They are mortal baseline humans. They are not Adeptus Astartes.

They are not Chapter-serfs of the house-roll. They are not Keep Militia under Watch-Captain Hans Holdfast.

Their houses are bonded to The Black Templars. The Keep calls. It does not own their daily bread.

When the call is made they stand the wall, the yard, and the road.

When it is not, they return to their houses.

II. THE FEDERAL FLAG
The tricolor is the cloth of the federation, not of the Chapter.
Blue band, the first house.
White band, the second house.
Grey band, the third house.
Three bands. Three houses. One levy.

The rook is the household. It sits upon the colour of its own house so that no house is lost in the cloth of the others.
These are not knightly arms. They are house-marks of a bonded levy.
The three houses march as one body. A Federation under the Keep’s domain.

 

III. THE CHAPTER FLAG
The black field bearing the white Maltese is carried beside the tricolor.
It is allegiance, not enlistment. It shows whom they serve when called.

It does not make them Chapter-serfs.

It does not place them under Chapter supervision.
The Cross is His. They bear it as bonded men, not as the Chapter’s own.

IV. ARMING
Pot-helm. Black ballastic mask or cloth covering the face.

Trench coat, leather gloves, and boots.

Coat worn and intact, not tattered upon the Keep yard.
Short-barrel shotgun or short barrel rifle as issued.

V. PURPOSE OF THIS SLIP
Entered so not to confuse House-Levy with Chapter-Serf, nor allegiance with ownership.

They raise the minor white Maltese on Black because they are not Astartes.
The red Maltese is the cloth of the Battle-Brothers. It is not theirs.

The Templar banner they raise is allegiance, not enlistment.
