Valkyrion
Vanguard Onslaught is what I'm going to run, I'm pretty settled on that, and I've got about 800 points painted so far, but that was mainly what I had on hand. Although most of what I painted seems to fit nicely into VO, I'm not wedded to anything, so I'm fishing for advice baring in mind that 1) I've not played with a Tyranid army since 5th, 2) I've only had a single game of 11th using the 11th ed boxed set, and 3) I've not really played anything with actions or secondaries so it's not part of my general game play I've got painted up; 10 Stealers and a Broodlord 10 Gargoyles Flying Prime Neurotyrant 3 Zoanthropes 3 VRL Lictor and Neurolictor The only units I'm particularly fond of keeping are the Stealers, Gargoyles and Lictors because they represent to me the archetypal Tyranid assault force going all the way back to 2nd, but they seem happily at home in this detachment anyway. So yeah, please teach me your teachings! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/388414-first-foray-into-11th-advice/ Share on other sites
Valkyrion
Where's that tumbleweed gif when you need it?! Maybe start lower, then; Winged Tyranid Prime - run him solo as an action monkey, or join him to the Gargoyles for Sustained? Focslain
Going to need to do a little research, but your model list looks ripe for Vanguard Onslaught. I'd keep the Prime with the gargoyles for the sustained hit. Your lictors can be the action monkeys just fine, if not better. If you can get your hands on some more VRLs and another nuerolictor you have a decent 1K force that can bounce on and off enemy units pretty decently. Valkyrion
Thanks, and there's no way I'm painting 260 gaunts so there's no danger of that list! Is there any merit to a single Biovore chucking a spore mine into table quarters? I'm thinking of going for fixed secondaries - always the one that requires 3 or 4 table quarters and then the second based on what my opponent brings. I know I'm losing a potential 5 VP, but this disposition and tyranids in general have lots of ways to uppy-downy (new term for me!) and lone op/stealth, and infiltrate all over the board. Hey, who gave you my Tyranid list. (I mean it's not LITERALLY my list, I only have 70 Hormagaunts, but I can supplement with Gargoyles.) As for the OP's question, while I haven't played them in 11th, in 10th I'd found the main thing that Vanguard tended to lack was some larger scale punching power. I'd recommend either a Flyrant, Trygon, or The Red Terror to be able to punch up into larger targets.
